Guest guest
Hi folks, This is a subject that comes up every so often - product liability insurance for the little guy - like so many of the artisans that are here on this list. The benefits of having product liability insurance in the litigious age we live are obvious. Also, many distributors, stores and even event venues are requiring that the manufacturers/vendors they work with have product liability insurance. RLI was a popular underwriter for small cottage industry homemade soap makers - but RLI changed its policies and the new rules made many ineligible for the RLI insurance, which left them seeking new coverage options. Now the Handmade Beauty Network and the Handcrafted Soap Makers Guild are working together with an underwriter who will provide small fry toiletry makers with insurance. Every member of those organizations must now get the insurance - it has become part of annual dues (there are 3 exceptions: http://www.handmadebeauty.com/insurance.asp). I did have a colleague mention to me that her home is insured by The Hartford, and they cover her home biz too, but that is available only for folks that have their home owner's insurance through them. Whenever folks ask me, I recommend them check into the HBN/HSMG option as well as local insurance companies. Many do provide commercial insurance policies (varying coverage/costs of course) and from there you can determine what suits your needs and price range. *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com <http://www.alittleolfactory.com/>
