Vicks type safety

Last year my sister had a terrible cold and grabbed some old Vicks

vapo-rub from the medicine cabinet and rubbed some under her nose and

just inside her nostrils. WHHOO!!! She could breathe again!

But the next day she noticed she couldn't smell anything! She

completely lost her sense of smell and taste. This has been a

terrible experience; she's had extensive tests to make sure she

doesn't actually have a brain tumor or some other cause and the Vicks

was just a coincidence. Nothing could be found and the MDs felt she

damaged her nasal passages enough, that she may never be able to

smell correctly again. It has slowly recovered a bit, but things

still smell " off " to her.

Anyway, I share this story because I read about a lot of people

making " cosmetics " using the same ingredients as Vicks, which we all

know is not a really cosmetic...but an OTC drug.

I saw this post today...from a formula someone was going to try and

sell for the holiday season;

menthol 3.9%

camphor 1.56%

tea tree .78%

Doesn't this seem strong and potentially hazardous? Or do I worry

too much? Sue

[Dave:] Something’s wrong with your formulation. 3.9% + 1.56% + .78% =

6.24%, which makes no sense. Unless the combined amounts equals just over

six percent of the total, in which case perhaps it’s a perfectly safe

application. I don’t see anything wrong with the dilution.

Seems to me the menthol is awfully high percentage-wise. I've been

told to keep menthol under .5 (one-half of one) percent, which is

plenty strong, IMHO.

Yes...the balance of the ingredients were the rest of the lip balm

oils, waxes and stuff. It was just these parts that seem like high

percentages in total and, medicinal...not " cosmetic " . Sue
