Guest guest
I'm posting this now eventhough there may not be anyone around to answer it. Murphys Oil Soap lists itself as pure vegetable oil soap but when I tried to find the ingredients I only saw listed potassium hydroxide. Does anyone know what's in Murphys Oil Soap? Guest guest
Hi Susan, Funny how they list the KOH and nothing else. Anyway - I did find this snippet of info, which was the closest thing I could find about their ingredients (aside from knowing the oils used to make it were KOH saponified : http://www.recipegoldmine.com/sources/sources.html vegetable-based detergent biodegradable and/or semi-synthetic detergent. A few brands are Heavenly Horse Tail, Earth Rite, Life Tree, Ecover and Oasis. Most of these are only found in health food stores. At the supermarket, look for Planet or Murphy's. Planet has been given the green cross certification by Scientific Certification Systems (new scientific organization that certifies products for environmental claims). These do not contain preservatives or artificial fragrances. Murphy's Oil Soap is advertised as a soap for wood, although it can be used as an all-purpose soap. It is a vegetable based soap, but does contain preservatives and artificial fragrances. *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com On Behalf Of susan I'm posting this now eventhough there may not be anyone around to answer it. Guest guest
Murphy's Oil Soap is advertised as a soap for wood, although it can be used as an all-purpose soap. It is a vegetable based soap, but does contain preservatives and artificial fragrances. [Dave:] I’ve used and considered this product a lot, as I used to restore antiques for a living. Since becoming a soapmaker, I’ve often thought of formulating products for both wood and leather. I don’t actually like Murphy’s very well. As a soap, it seems very heavily superfatted, and no doubt the preservatives are there to keep it from becoming rancid. I would guess that it’s based on saponified linseed or some other “junk” oils. For what it’s worth, I have rarely seen a necessity for using soap on wood. Modern furniture almost never needs anything other than a moist rag. Oil polishes are mostly superfluous, and wax polishes are more labor-intensive than most folks are willing to deal with. Old finishes require special care, and soap isn’t normally part of the kit. -- Version: 7.5.432 / Virus Database: 268.15.26/594 - Release 12/20/2006 3:54 PM -- Version: 7.5.432 / Virus Database: 268.15.26/594 - Release 12/20/2006 3:54 PM
