Guest guest
Hi All, I'm currently on vacation in China (Hainan Province), and have noticed a lot of swelling in my lower legs and ankles. You can't even see the " knobs " of my ankle joints, and if I press my fingers on the swelling I leave actual " dents " in the swelling! Can anyone suggest anything I might be able to do alleviate the problem? It's not painful, but is somewhat worrisome, esp. since I don't know what may be causing it. I have a doctors appt scheduled for shortly after I return for my annual checkup and will mention it to her at that time, but in the meantime, while I'm on this tour, I need some words of advice if there are any. Thanks! Karen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Karen M. Chan | kmchan | Whatever Happens... Smile! http://www.linkline.com/personal/kmchan/index.html P.O. If you keep your legs moving and elevate them periodically, that might help. Sometimes diurrhetics help too.And avoid salty foods. If you start to notice any redness, pain, or heat in your legs, you should probably see a doctor there rather than waiting till you get home. Just a disclaimer here - I'm not a doctor. This is just what I've read about the condition. Best of luck and hope your poor legs feel better soon! -Patty

Sometimes merely the pressure of a lot of walking can do it, and if you're not a walker typically, and this tour has you walking a lot, well, bingo. What you have is called " pitting edema " and it can be dangerous, so that's another possibility. You're just not pumping the fluid back up. Get to as massage therapist asap, preferably one associated with a TCM doctor. Your hotel concierge could refer one. If nothing else, the massage can push those fluids up! Your tour guide is probably used to this problem arising from walking -- ask him or her for advice, also. I saw Patty's advice, and that's good too, but I'd look after it asap if it were me.
