methyl salicylate

From reading here I see methyl salicylate is a harmful chemical. I

was recently reading up on ylang ylang and on a couple of websites I

see methyl salicylate listed as one of the components-but the majority

of sites do not include methyl salicylate as a component. Ylang ylang

seems to be a commonly used eo. Do many eo's include methyl

salicylate but perhaps at less than toxic levels or was the

information I found about ylang ylang and methyl salicylate incorrect?

I do plan on getting a copy of Plant Aromatics but until then,

wondering if anyone can answer. Susan

You won't find an answer there as I try to avoid the hogwash chemistry

out there.

Methyl salicylate is NOT a natural chemical, it is part of the chemical

conversion processes which an essential oil is distilled or processed.

Many oils contain small amounts and often not in the top 10 chemicals

that a cheap GLC gives. Only expensive GLCs will give the numerous

other chemicals occuring in a natural oil.

The import thing is not that a particular chemical occurs, but how much

and how much is needed to cause a problem. In the case of Ylang there

are other chemicals which can cause allergic reactions in some people

and at far higher levels that Methyl salicylate.

Beware of chemistry in relation to essential oils, most of it is

incorrectly interpreted by none experts.
