Guest guest
I second the motion on the custom orthotics. This is my second bout with this painful problem. The first was in 2000 just prior to my flying off to Italy - I could barely walk. A local orthotic lab did me a special favor (after much pleading) and made me the custom inserts in 3 days. My doctor gave me (as in billed my insurance company) a boot to wear at night - left the darn thing under my seat of the plane when we landed in Rome (don't ask how awful the experience of flying Alitalia was). Cannot recall how long the problem lasted but is was a breeze compared to what I am now going through with my other foot. Yep, now I have awful pain in my left foot. And guess what it started, in Feb. 2006 just before our trip to Hawaii. Is there a vacation god who is mad a me I wonder. Dr. has given me 2 different aappliances to wear at night - both were IMO crap and created more problems then just the pain in the plantar. My hairdresser lent me his appliance as did the manager at the Curves where I work out. Eureka! Found what I think is best appliance that seems to help. Name of the company who sells these (available on line) is A Dorsal Night Splint. I bought mine on eBay - new in the box - for $20.00 less including shipping then the mfgr. offered to sell me one. I was sent to a chiropractor for spurs on my spine that are causing pinched nerves. He was also asked to treat my plantar problem. He said the inserts were expensive and he'd like the opportunity to work on my foot. Hmmm! Let's see - you bill me for a foot procedure with an elec. device, a wrap with a special bandage and collect this 2 to 3 times a week for a few weeks. I finally indicated that I longer wanted to have the sports med. person work on my foot. Went to my Dr - it was his day off saw another fella I really like. He has had this problem since med school and he is in practice for over 16 years now. Forgot to ask him if it was chronic or sporadic. Any how he gave me a PRESCRIPTION for custom orthotics which I took to a lab. ***AND MY INSRUANCE PAID FOR THEM. So my advise to check with your carrier and get an RX. Don't ask me about the $300 off the shelf orthodics and the $200 running looking shoes (Z Coils) with the springs on the heels. These orthotics did nada. The Z coil shoes allowed me to walk around France with little heel pain and helped my back. They are ugly as heck but I do like them if I have to be on my feet for a long time. Did find them hard to negotiate steps (narrow risers) as they are kinda clunky with a large foot print. I have trouble going down steps any way - I wear no line bifocals and they seem to not allow me to accurately judge the edge of the step when I look down. I am extremely careful on stairs and always hold the handrail. Don't need to break any thing at my age. On another note at the end of my spinal treatments the chriopracter indicated there was new research out on a stretch for the foot that helped 80% of the test group - takes 8 weeks and you do it three times a day. Place your hand on the underside of the foot apply pressure to push the foot into a stretch - feel the plantar tighten with your other hand to know it's doing something - hold for 10 seconds release and do again for 10 or more sets. You do this while sitting in a chair. I do it at the movies (captive audience) and I try to do it while watching TV. I need to be more consistent with it as guess what - we are off on vacation to Turkey and Greece in May. Since the current problem has been here from Feb. 2005 I want to get rid of it if possible. OK, thats all for now off to make lots of soap for a big wholesale order.
