Guest guest
I had the very same issue with one of my female cats. Come to find out she insisted on her litter box being immaculately clean at all times - whew.... so, I purchased a super clumping cat litter made in Canada and I can easily keep the litter clean at least every day. What we don't do for our pets......... Now, this means, of course, that you have had her checked at the vets to eliminate the fact that there's nothing wrong with her physically.. Good Luck, it can certainly be frustrating..... Evie M.
Guest guest
Hi, I have 3 cats and one of them, the only female, is refusing to use the litter box. She is obese and I think the litter may hurt her feet so I am considering trying different types of litter like paper type instead of clumping clay. I have been putting her in the bathroom with a litter box at night because every morning we would wake up to find where she had had a BM on the carpet in the living room. Now its as if she is holding it until she can be let out of the bathroom so she can go on the carpet. Does anyone have any suggestions. We have 3 litter boxes, one on the second floor and two on the first floor. Thanks for any suggestions you might have. Jo Ann Nourse PS There have been no major changes like a new cat or moving. Guest guest
One of our females started this after we had her spayed. One theory is that the cat associates the litter with pain, after surgery, and so refuses to use the box, since urinating hurts after the surgery. I'm skeptical on that one, but since our cat used the box before the surgery, anything's possible. There is a spray the vet can give you (expensive), but it didn't work with our cat. Nothing ever worked. My son has a female that does the same thing. He has gone the same route -- vet visits, sprays, different litter, different box, plenty of boxes, it never made a bit of difference. I have no explanation and no help, other than to let you know that it probably isn't anything you're doing wrong -- it's the cat! Susan H. Does anyone have any suggestions. We have 3 litter boxes, one on the second floor and two on the first floor.
Guest guest
Ø Hi, I have 3 cats and one of them, the only female, is refusing to use > the litter box. [Dave:] I had to chuckle at this, even though I know it isn’t funny at all! I also have a cat who refuses to use a litter box. Miz Odessa is a strange little thing in many ways. She used to use the litter box just fine, until one day when she sat and took a good look at me sitting on the toilet one day. Ever since, she has hopped up and gone in the bathroom sink. Actually, I think it was pretty clever of her. Yes, it is kinda gross. On the other hand it’s easy to clean up, and there’s never any cat smell in our house. If I was you I would try a box without any litter at all. Cats sometimes prefer this. Your problem is that your cat has formed a habit, and I don’t know very many things harder than breaking a cat of a bad habit. -- Version: 7.5.432 / Virus Database: 268.17.14/658 - Release 1/29/2007 2:49 PM -- Version: 7.5.432 / Virus Database: 268.17.16/660 - Release 1/30/2007 5:04 PM

If you are using plastic container, consider switching to something metal or aluminum. With the scratching of multiple cats, even a box that appears clean can have an offensive odor to a cat. Also, the type of litter. My cats hate clumping litter. It sticks to their feet, and anything that is on a cat ends up in a cat. I now use Feline pine or the stuff made out of corn cobs. It dries out unlike the clay stuff. A vet check is in order. It can also be a symptom of cystitis.
Guest guest
Thanks for all of your advice. I agree that girl cats are more finicy about the cleanliness of their litter box that boy cats. Currently I am using a clumping clay litter with baking soda and it is cleaned out at least twice a day. I will try the corn cob or pine type and see if that helps.j I mentioned to my son about the empty litter box suggestion and he said no way was he cleaning that out. Maybe if nothing else works I can line the empty litter box with newspaper to soak things up and he would empty it that way. I took the same cat to the vet a few months ago because of her weight. I thought she might have a thyroid problem. No she just likes to eat. If none of these suggestions work out I will take her back to the vet. Guest guest
I wonder if she I one of these finicky cats that needs a box all to herself and it needs to be impeccably clean. Maybe she doesn't like going in the same place as the males. Also sometimes animals do things to tell us stuff, maybe she has an infection or a problem she is trying to tell you. We had a Beagle do this once, starting peeing on our bed!! Found out she had an infection internally. So a new bed and vet visit later she was back to normal. I would keep her locked up at night like you have and then put her directly outside In the morning till you figure it out. Good luck!
