Guest guest
Hello, I'm new to EO's. I'm a dental hygienist and wanted to make a spray that I can spray in my mask at work that would be pleasent and would last all day. I did some research, read a few books, got peoples opinions and then I bought my supplies. I was told Lavendar, Bergamot, Lemon, Pine, and Rose Geranium would be nice to start with. I got myself some four ounce spray bottles and went to work. First three bottles I blended with 4 oz of distilled water to: Bottle 1. 40 drops Lavender, 30 drops Rose Geranium, 24 drops Lemon, and 30 drops Bergamot Bottle 2. 50 drops Pine, 20 drops Lavender, Bottle 3. 50 drops Bergamot, 45 drops Lemon, and 25 drops Lavender My last bottle was 3 oz distilled water to 35 drops lemon. All bottles were shook well before spraying. Even waited 24 hours before using. Took the bottles to work and everyone including myself thought everyone smelled bad. For some reason I thought the spray was going to have an amazing scent. I thought the Wow factor was going to play apart with OE's. Did I do something wrong? I would appreciate any help you can give this novice. Thank you, Jill
Guest guest
It might be the mixture of them. Bergamot (I cannot stand it) some people love it. It might be the bottles? but I would have to be able to smell it to let you know.. Jennifer ---- JW 2/24/2007 5:53:31 PM Help! What did I do wrong? Hello, I'm new to EO's. Guest guest
Did I do something wrong? I would appreciate any help you can give this novice. Thank you, Jill [Dave:] I’m not so sure you really did anything wrong, except maybe spend too much your first time out. You know how when you mix colors, you always know what the result will be? Red and blue are always purple, etc…well, imagine that instead of always doing as expected, once in a while threw in some quirk just to keep you on your toes. Red and blue make purple until the day they made orange – but then you could never get that shade of orange again! That sort of thing. EOs are sorta like that when you begin blending scents. There are many variables, including personal chemistry, and the brands of oils used. Perfumes are grouped into families – floral (L’Air du Temps), chypre (Halston), oriental (Opium), etc. And traditionally they will have a dominant scent as well as a high note and a bass note. With EOs, simpler is nearly always better. Not that three or four oils can’t work splendidly together – but the “kitchen sink” approach is a waste. It takes a lot of trial and error to come up with a killer scent, so keep experimenting! -- Version: 7.5.446 / Virus Database: 268.18.3/699 - Release 2/23/2007 1:26 PM -- Version: 7.5.446 / Virus Database: 268.18.3/699 - Release 2/23/2007 1:26 PM

Experiment some more and let us know what happens. Cheers! -Patty
Guest guest
Hello JW, I too am a novice. As such my only suggestion is that a little too much of the oils were used, one of those cases where too much of a good thing. Then I would think about mixing oil with water, in my own mind's eye I see a solution rather like a salad dressing of little oily molecules floating in the water, a solution would be to use something like a good quality vodka or in your line of work a good alcohol base would be available to disperse these little oil molecules better. I am sorry I am such a poor orator. I think you are on the right track, certainly, I would perhaps start by having my four ounce bottle's using vodka instead of water and then just use 1 drop or the minimum you can manage to add to your solution at a time, gradually adding more drops until you get the perfume and smell you had hoped for. It will still work very well as both a deodoriser and a sanitizer, the vodka giving it the extra zap of an alcohol swab and of course the various oils will be good or various treatments, the lavender will relax and ease pain for instance as well as aid in the healing. I would therefore try using 4 drops lavender, 3 drops rose geranium, 2.4 drops lemon, 3 drops of bergamot for example and then build it up from there until you reach that balance you want. Please don't be offended by this tidbit, it is meant in the nicest way. I too tend to forget all the time and start the wrong way around, it is easier though to add more than take it away. Guest guest
The bottles themselves could be the problem. If they're plastic, did you smell them before you used them? Some of them smell pretty bad. Even if they smelled fine, an oil might react with the plastic.
