Pamela,

Thank you for the compliments they are appreciated. Since I set my

web site up around 1994, it has built up to around 3-400 visitors

(not hits) a day, yet I only get a congratulation once in a blue

moon. This has never bothered me, but it is nice to be appreciated.

Only this afternoon I had a call from Daniel Ryman who is one of the

few leading name aromatherapists that i have any respect for. She

said " Martin you are doing a great job " . My reply was " thank you but

my stand on the dishonesty in this trade has left me out on a limb

with hardly any income from the UK. The basic fact is most people

only want to believe in fairy tales, despite what they proclaim

otherwise. When someone comes along and says " hey you have all been

sold a pile of hogwash " , few people want to believe that.

What does irritate me though is people thinking I am the only one to

castigate the liars and cheats in this trade. Over the years several

good people have dropped out because they felt they were knocking

their head againast a brick wall. It just happens I am someone who

has just managed to hang on in here by my finger nails. At least

when I go under the ground, my Son will make sure my writings are

still available on the internet.

As to your comments on not dabbling with aromatherapy, yes you are

right, I have never told people not to do that, but if they do dabble

they must ensure they are doing it in a safe and effective manner.

Hence the reason I put the free download on my site which several

hundred have now got.

You mentioned about natural remedies for menstrual cramps. Having

had two close friends who had that badly, prompted me years ago to

investigate the utter trash in the popular books about pennyroyal

oil. It makes me damned mad that a wonderful remedy for that problem

is rarely used because of urban myths and bad science about this

wonderful oil. That is the major problem with aromatherapy today,

pseudo science is used to justify the unjustifiable and good science

is often dismissed or not uncovered from the mountains out there.

Well I better hit the sack, but wanted to get this away tonight (UK

time)

[Dave:] I, too, appreciate the knowledge you share. As a soapmaker in a

craft where many people seem to care more about the way soap smells than

about the way it interacts with the skin, I’ve stayed away from perfume oils

altogether and used EOs only sparingly. I’ve been stubborn on that point,

and I was glad to learn of someone with your expertise who seemed to

indicate I was correct in being cautious with them.

[Dave:] I don’t think you can really get into soapmaking without at least

dabbling in aromatherapy. Ditto for any of the other “natural” products

that folks are making – maybe artisan products is a better term. I’m really

glad to see these discussions so that people realize there are hazards to

using these products. Not that we shouldn’t use them, but that we should

learn to be wise.
