Guest guest
I believe this is distillation. " Place the pot lid, > inverted, on the pot and boil the water then lower to a simmer. This " recipe " is a modified version someone repeated of the many posts I have made since 1995 on how Turkish peasants obtain Essential Oils and Rose Water (and other oils and floral waters) in their homes. The difference is they don't use ovenproof ware .. normally copper ware. ;-) Another difference is .. if the procedure is done correctly .. there will be a fair amount of essential oil in the inner container .. and the outer container will hold the floral water. I don't know the amount of heat they use or how long they cook it but for sure its long enough for it to boil .. and since they have a very low ratio of water to plant material there will obviously be a caramelized effect on the produce produced. > What I came away with was clear water that smelled nicely of roses. What you came away with is exactly what they come away with. > Is this rosewater or just rose-smelling regular water? It is Rosewater .. which is Rose-smelling regular water. It is NOT a Hydrosol .. a Hydrosol can only be made through distillation. Whether or not it has any therapeutic value .. I don't know. I expect that it does .. but this comment is based on logic rather than any proof since I know of know research to support it. > Susan Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com

" [Dave:] This works best with a pot that has a domed lid and a handle shaped such that it will drip cleanly. You would also place a bag of ice on the upturned lid, this is your condenser. Didn’t catch the whole thread, but I have tried this and it does work. -- Version: 7.5.446 / Virus Database: 268.18.8/717 - Release 3/10/2007 2:25 PM -- Version: 7.5.446 / Virus Database: 268.18.8/717 - Release 3/10/2007 2:25 PM
