Guest guest
I have had an irritating tickly throat with occasional cough lately. OK, I admit it, I have been eating too much butter and cheese. That does it to me. I am walking proof of the lung/large intestine connection. But telling a Dutch gal to avoid dairy is like advising a Hopi to go easy on the cornmeal. I decided to try some of the herbs I collected last summer, along with some liquorice from the local health food store. Since liquorice is root, I simmered it for a while. Then I poured the liquorice tea over a mix of red clover, allheal and mullein leaf. Instant relief! My throat feels so much smoother. Now I wonder if it's the mullein, the liquorice, or both. Guest guest
The Mullein (Verbascum thapsus), Ien, for sure. From my materia medica - constituents: flavonoids, mucilage, saponins, tannins, volatile oil. Actions: expectorant, demulcent, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, nervine, anti-spasmodic, vulnerary, alterative, astringent. Indications: . . . Very beneficial respiratory remedy useful in most conditions of the heart/lung system; tones mucous membranes of respiratory system; specific for bronchitis, protracted colds, catarrah, hemoptysis. Very appropriate for dry, hoarse cough. My first experience with Mullein was as an infused oil w/garlic for earache, but I've since learned it's many other uses. It combines well with white horehound herb, coltsfoot and lobelia . . . In painful coughing, combine with elder and red clover and for asthma with gumweed. Infuse dried leaves/flowers (1-2 teaspoonsful)in boiling water for about 10-15 minutes; drink 3 times/day. If using tincture take 1-4 ml tincture 3 times/day.
