Hi Tracy,

Your post was entitled: " Large Scale Essential Oil Lotion Advice " .

But in fact, it matters not whether one is making 1 ounce of lotion of

making a 50 gallon drum of lotion .. the percentage of EO to use to

ensure safe dilution does not change.

> I was hoping someone could help me out. I find it hard to calculate

> larger additions of essential oils to products. I know that essential

> oils are all different and some need to be used lightly. Can anyone

> give me an approx idea of how much eo's could be added to say 4 litres

> like peppermint, citrus etc. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

As I have written many times before .. there is absolutely no Rule Of

Thumb for the use of essential oils .. there are no categories of safe

vs fairly safe vs not safe!

Each essential oil used in perfumes, cosmetics and aromatherapy has a

proven safe percentage of dilution .. to try to guess what this safe

limit is would be dangerous.

The SAFE percentages for dilution are different for most EO!

THE Safety Manual on referenced, scientifically proven safe dilution

for dermal application of Essential Oils is Martin Watt's Plant

Aromatics .. it can be seen and ordered at URL

http://www.av-at.com/plantaromaticsavnp.html The revised edition

came out in November 2001 and is now in the Fifth Printing. It is now

on sale .. see the next post I send.

If we deal with blends and don't have this Safety Manual as a desk

side reference .. and we ask others for advice on the percentages of

EO to use .. unless those answering are quoting proven data then we

are playing Russian Roulette.

And .. contrary to the many false rumors that this industry spreads,

Lavender and Tea Tree are not oils that one can use neat .. there are

MANY people around (and on this list) who are sensitized to one or the

other of those two oils.

Thanks Butch for the link. I know what you are saying about the safety

issues. I tend to use low amounts of EO's to stay on the safe side and

stay away from ones that can be dangerous. I am formulating a bug blend

and I am trying to come up with a safe but effective blend of EO's. I

agree with the lavender and tea tree oils neat, not a good idea.

[Dave:] I haven’t bought Martin’s book yet, and I gotta. I use EOs

sparingly too, and even so, I guess I’ve been lucky. I’ve been using tea

tree oil neat for close to 40 years. When I was a kid, clove oil was

commonplace for toothache, and some peppermint oil in hot sugar water was

the standard remedy for a tummyache. Aw heck, we had turpin hydrate and

paregoric in the medicine cabinet, ether and chloroform under the sink, and

probably a box of blasting caps in the garage, too. Somehow we survived.

My point is that there’s always dangerous stuff around, and we have to

remain cautious with it, and use common sense. Essential oils are powerful

agents, and it can’t be emphasized enough that using them ain’t playin’ with

crayons.
