Guest guest
Hey Susan, Not sure if I sent this one today or not .. sent a lotta mail I did. If it shows up twice .. I will know the answer. Was going over some of the old posts that were sent to the list while I was in Russia .. saw this one but didn't see where it was answered later. So I'll send a couple of old posts that will answer it. There are other posts too but I don't have time to search them out in the Archives .. I lost all of my files (temporarily) so I can't refer to them now. > 3. essential oil grades/labeling > Posted by: " susan " ripple95 lucy100204 > Fri Jan 5, 2007 8:41 am ((PST)) > > I am just getting into learning about eo's so I haven't bought much, > just some patchouli and pine for scenting around the house. If you are reading about Grades of Oils in the archives then read more cause when folks talk about grades normally someone corrects them. ;-) > The oils I have state they are 100% pure. What can that mean-that > they may contain a certain amount of pure eo and some other > ingredients? I've gone to several random websites that sell eo's and > most only state 100% pure or certified organic. I haven't seen > " grades " listed. Where would this info be? There is no credible source for the info you seek. We must be careful when reading what is written because its what's not there that is often more important than what is there. The words " 100% pure " can mean an oil that is 10% in 90% carrier .. both being 100% pure. I have seen Olive Oil in grocery stores with 100% Pure in big letters on the front of the label and the back side says something like, " 100% Pure Olive Oil in XVXBXVX Oil. " When an oil is mixed or diluted .. the seller should clearly state same and most do .. but not all. > If some sellers of eo's are not experinced and only know what their > suppliers tell them how can I determine what is suitable for my needs? Join lists like this .. and educate yourself. You cannot depend on sellers to educate you except on lists like this. This is NOT a totally transparent industry. > At this point my only expectation would be " pure " oil-no other ingredients > added-I'm not sure what grade that would be considered but I'd like to make > sure I know what I'm buying. See above. As for grades .. there is an Aromatherapy Grade and a Commercial Grade .. the former should always be 100% Pure and as it came from the still .. with a couple of exceptions for things like FCF Bergamot and a couple of others .. the Commercial Grade should also be 100% Pure but it might have been manipulated by man .. like the 40/42 Lavenders .. more on that later. But all this A and B Grade crap is just that .. its marketing hype. Actually, there are but two KINDS of essential oils .. pure and adulterated. But keep in mind that a pure oil does not necessarily mean a quality oil .. there are many mediocre oils that are pure. > Eventually I'd like to consider eo's for soaps, lotions, shampoos > but right now I use them only for scenting the air and adding > to cleaning products. Gotta get that edumocation. Gonna try to help you a bit on that with the following posts. Some will answer questions other than yours but they are (I think) questions not yet asked. ;-) Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
