Guest guest
Hey Paula, Just got my PC put back together today .. still can't send through my Netscape email system and they tried to install Outlook Express but it won't work either .. so those who will be getting posts from me will see long lines that I can't control because I am using my server's post office system to send mail. My posts to this list look OK because the system straightens out the lines. But .. I did manage to get back all the files that had been lost. :-P Not planning to do anything else to this old dinosaur PC cause its too old and its 220V .. and I am leaving Turkey NLT 20 May .. this one goes in the dump then. ;-) >>Butch said: " Recognize also .. that only a very small amount of the >>Rosewood trees cut down are turned into Rosewood Essential Oil .. >>normally the wood shavings are used. The reason Rosewood is valuable >>is it is great for making expensive furniture and classy coffins for >>the wealthy. " > > Hi Butch, > They also use rosewood to make acoustic guitars and they sound so > beautiful...you can include that in your list. Here is how naive I > was...I use to think rosewood was for aromatherapy...until I saw my first > rosewood acoustic guitar. It is .. in fact .. the Brazilian Aniba roseodora species of Rosewood that that was traditionally used in making acoustic guitars. But it is more costly than the Rosewood from Madagascar and India so that wood is replacing the Brazilian for all but those who want to pay for the real thing. I have a number of pieces of Ottoman antique furniture in Tennessee .. some of them are Rosewood. And just last night my landlord showed me a couple of new smoking pipes he ordered from England .. one was Briar and the other was Rosewood .. both were expensive. ;-) Some luxury cars have used Rosewood for the dash. Fancy pool cues and knife handles are often made with Rosewood. Then there is Rosewood flooring. http://www.countyfloors.com/species_rosewood.html Look at the prices of this Rosewood furniture. http://www.orientalfurniture.com/oriental-furniture/RWD.html Like Dave said .. there are around a dozen or so species in the genus commonly called Rosewood .. and I can't know which is used for what but for sure most of the Rosewood logs removed from the Amazon are used for purposes other than Essential Oils. But .. the Rosewood used for producing Essential Oils is primarily from the South American species Aniba roseodora .. and those trees in the Rain Forest are NOT cut down for the purpose of producing Essential Oils. As I wrote before .. we can accurately consider them as being collateral damage. > I agree that the rosewood trees will continue to be cut down despite our > best efforts otherwise...there are so many other factors involved. For sure .. when loggers with or without permission go into a forest they operate as a business .. they are already there and hauling out logs so they're not going to leave behind any tree that can be sold. Those of us in the USA and in Europe and in a few other countries where life is not so difficult have the luxury of viewing things rather idealistic .. true it is that sometimes that idealism is necessary to " try " to prevent drastic changes in certain eco-systems ... but our best efforts are not good enough because fat cats have a difficult time dictating policy to hungry mice. Despite the best efforts, there is no economic equality in the world .. and that is not likely to change. What is likely to change are various ecosystems throughout this planet and also climate .. but then .. climate has changed back and forth for a few billion years. Man might be able to do a bit about slowing change in some areas but man is destined to lose the battle in the long run .. Mama Nature is gonna do things Her way regardless of what we want. We are not going to stop Survival of the Fittest or Evolution. Any and all efforts by man to change the systems we have in place .. are going to be criticized by some circles .. it matters not what we do. Castro has just written another article criticizing the USA .. this time on the environment. I think he is right and wrong .. he criticizes the US plan for support of ethanol production. From the Associate Press: > " Condemned to premature death by hunger and thirst more than 3 billion > people of the world, " read the headline in Castro's article in the > Communist Party daily Granma, which asserted that U.S. President Bush's > support of using crops to produce ethanol for automobiles in rich > nations could deplete food stocks in developing countries. " He went on to say: > " But if rich nations decide to import huge amounts of traditional food > crops such as corn from developing countries to help meet their energy > needs, it could have disastrous consequences for the world's poor. " > > " Apply this recipe to the countries of the Third World and you will see > how many people among the hungry masses of our planet will no longer > consume corn, " the article said. > > " Or even worse: by offering financing to poor countries to produce > ethanol from corn or any other kind of food no tree will be left to > defend humanity from climate change. " Though his analysis is not all that profound, he is not all wrong. There will always be an impact from any action mankind takes .. for eliminating hunger and pestilence and disease and war .. for science finding ways for folks to live longer, healthier lives .. there is a price to pay for all these things. We can't have it both ways. Few folks from relatively wealthy countries are willing to give up their comforts .. like .. Al Gore pays approximately 10 X more for his monthly gas and electric bills than does the average American family. I am not holding my breath waiting for many of even the Greenest of Greens to walk the walk as they talk the talk. And I .. like most of you folks .. am not willing to drive an electric car even if they come up with an efficient one .. unless it can do at least 60 MPH. ;-) Maybe the main problem we have in the world today is too many people with too many demands .. and too many others wanting to see that those demands are met without harm to the planet. Such goals are good and if those folks are sincere .. then I salute them .. but its not very realistic. It is claimed that Jesus fed the multitudes with a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish and had baskets full of bread and fish left over after everyone was fed. That is a tough act to follow. > You take care, > Paula Yes ma'am .. and you .. and y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com

[Dave:] It is, indeed, a tough act to follow. As always, Butch, I find your insights valuable and pretty much right on target most of the time. It seems to me that what we’ve done is create a way of life that is ultimately unsustainable, and that all over the world, things that used to work are now falling apart. And it seems to me that I’m seeing this at many levels, from desperate governments to co-workers with their private crises and screw-ups. Some people are talking about all the astrological stuff going on, which I tend to think is a crock, but who knows? I just think we’ve done bad, and the piper’s asking to be paid. I think one world is ending and another is beginning, and the change is agonizing for a lot of people. -- Version: 7.5.446 / Virus Database: 268.18.22/739 - Release 3/29/2007 1:36 PM -- Version: 7.5.446 / Virus Database: 268.18.22/739 - Release 3/29/2007 1:36 PM
