Guest guest
My daughter had a paper where she was asked if today was much more violent than when i was growing up, her answer was yes. My answer was, probably not. I was asked to explain why I gave the answer I did and here it pretty much is what I said. When I was growing up there was the Boston Strangler, the Son of Sam, Manson the cold war, JFK, Bobby, MLKing, Vietnam, the PLO and race riots. When I lived in the Philippines, we (as well as wealthy folk) had armed guards outside our gate to prevent kidnappings and mayhem. There was Marcos with his quiet (at the time) disappearances, we got stopped by armed bandits to buy tickets for a carnival that was weeks over ( we bought them ;-) ) and this doesn't even touch on the natural disaster that happened nor is my memory brilliant, I know that I've forgotten other stuff. The point being is that things perhaps haven't changed all that much. One thing that HAS changed is the way things are covered by the media. The press is all over disasters now like wet on water. The pictures are in your face in a way they weren't a while back. The other thing that I will freely admit is that the scope of the horrors is larger due to bigger, faster ?better? technology. But... has the AMOUNT of trouble increased or is that just our present day perception? K -- Cheers!
