Guest guest
OK, having grown up in Austin and living there for all my life (except the past 7 years), I've been to almost every one of those restaurants and can give a pretty good description of them, etc. One that did not show up, and I assume is still there, is Serrano's -- good food, WONDERFUL fish dishes! Really GOOD margaritas. Matt's El Rancho: the original location was better that their " new " one -- food is classic old Austin Mexican. The problem I, and many others, have with this restaurant is the way it was built makes conversation difficult to carry on. It's cavernous, so everything echoes and you can barely hear the person sitting next to you. Guerro's on South Congress -- good, quite yuppy (is that an old term now), and kinda within the gay community. I found their sauces to be extremely hot. Their margaritas are like the ones you get in Mexico - - quite strong!! La Fonda San Miguel -- oh my!! Just about my favorite place to eat! The ambience is wonderful, kinda pricey -- MANGO margaritas (yum! ... uhhh, do you see a pattern here??) -- I can't remember if they take reservations but you'd want one, or be prepared to wait and drink the margaritas, or libation of your choice. The calabacitas are great, so is their fish. It is more of an interior Mexico food type place. Manual's -- OK, yes -- good margaritas. A place where I used to meet friends after work for marg's and chips and dinner. A bit more " modern " with the Mexican food (black beans instead of refried), but good food, also kind of trendy. Las Manitas, kind of across the street from Manual's. I've only eaten lunch there -- bit hangout at lunch for the law firm crowd in Austin - very good food. Therefore, since it was lunch, I don't know about margaritas -- I'm not even sure they serve dinner. Great place for weekend breakfast. I hope they are still open, last I heard the great urban sprall in downtown Austin was trying to squish them and force them into selling. Frankly, I'm not familiar with Abuelos. There's one here in Bryan (100 miles NE of Austin), it's a chain. Folks who have been there said the food's OK, prices a bit high for what you get. Nor have I been to Curra's Grill, it came along after I left. Considering it's on Oltorf, though, I would think they'd be pretty good.
