OK, this is where I draw the line: Sheryl Crow calls for a limit on

the use of toilet paper, " only one square per restroom visit, except,

of course, on those pesky occasions where two are three are required. "

Well, remind me never to shake her hand!! (And as a fellow friend and

Texan remarked " no wonder Lance broke up with her " .)

well, when I went to france in the 80's they were already rationing paper~ i

was given 1 square, If I wanted more I had to purchase it~ We were at the

airport and I had to scream through the bathroom for dh to go get some

kleenex's and have another person smuggle them in to me~ what a PIA

litterally~ lol~ then the attendant didn't want her to bring me the paper, I

tell ya , I thought it was going to be an internation incident~lol

Hi Dede,

I often think of Easter Island - what did the person who cut down the last

tree think back then? Much the same attitude as some of us have today that

we aren't willing to sacrifice and conserve for the future? I suspect

building those idols took precedence over the practicality of saving their

civilization. At least that's how it appears to me, albeit difficult to

fathom.

Toilet paper is a convenience and privilege, not a right. Luxuries like

this now seem commonplace and perhaps aren't perceived as luxuries at all by

most. It has been a gradual consumer quest from the days of Melissa's

grandparents and earlier pioneers/civilizations as she described earlier.

So, now fast forward to our ability to change channels on the TV. without

leaving the comfort of our recliner. We now cope with obesity and the myriad

diseases associated with being fat in part because conveniences have allowed

us to expend less energy necessary for vibrant health.

What about disposable diapers? Do you have the same attitude about those,

Dede, and would never advocate using cloth? I always wash my hands after

going to the toilet, no matter how much toilet paper I use, and I suspect

that Cheryl Crow does, too. I like my creature comforts as much as the next

person, but I'm willing to change if it presents the hope of sustainability

for the planet and the future. One of the things I'm facing is giving up

buying lattes. For someone in the NW, that's akin to giving up a body part!

However, not only is it a $16-$20 per day crunch on our family budget (for

both of us), the paper and plastic use in that industry is really

unnecessary. (More coffee roasters should insist on bringing your own

cup/carafe.) I'm investing in a cold coffee maker (still get your caffeine,

but not the acid) and frothing my own milk, making this an economic and

healthier choice.

There are alternatives that will slow the rate of deforestation to make

myriad paper products we consume, unthinking. Cancel your newspaper and

read it online. Purchase a reusable grocery bag. Buy a bidet toilet. Use

damp cloth wipes that can be washed. These latter probably sound like

horrifying suggestions to people so accustomed to the privileges and

luxuries we have in this country. I don't mean to personally offend you,

Dede, and I certainly understand the attitude you convey. We have done

little as a society to instill the virtues of thriftiness and

re-using/recycling. Quite the opposite, so one could argue that it isn't

your fault; you're only doing what you've been taught to do.

I really think that Earth Day should be every day. If each day, we choose

an individual act that helps, they will add up to big changes.

Well as recent tests have shown, no matter how much toilet paper you choose

to use, and no matter if you fold or crunch, there is still going to be a

heap opf aritculate matter floating around.

In other words you will still spray 1 or 2 s everywhere, no matter the care.

It sprays over the toilet, tests show it settles on the taps, walls,

ceilings and floor and yes us too.

LOL
