Guest guest
Hey Dave, >>Those who don't want to accept the forecast of Wars for Water might >>oughta do a bit more research .. > > [Dave:] Butch, your comments are always a breath of fresh air. You have > experience in parts of the world most of us never see (and certainly don't > learn squat about by watching the networks) – and your common sense and > sober judgment are priceless as far as I'm concerned. (I was gonna say > they're worth the price of admission for sure...then I realized I got in > for free). I get up early and try to check the international press – Al > Jazeera, the Hindu Group, Jerusalem Post, der Spiegel, The Independent – > and try to get a sense of what's going on (besides no doubt getting flagged > by Homeland Security for my reading habits). I've come to depend on your > outlook on the areas you know so well to give me background for the > headlines. I thank you sir for the kind comments and I'm happy that my comments are of some value to you. I've lived more than half my life outside the USA and while I was in uniform it was my duty to learn about the country(s) I was in .. and those surrounding it .. from inside rather than from outside looking in. Sometimes it was a bit hairy but it was always interesting and I continued to try to do that after I retired. I have a lotta good memories .. in my noggin and on paper and on film and on video. Old Soldiers like to look back because there is more behind than there is to see by looking forward. ;-) I was there in Saigon when Dinh and Ngu were overthrown .. was riding a 1958 Italian Galeria bike all around town and shooting photos while the Vietnamese Army shot everything else .. and avoiding the White Mice (Vietnamese cops) who were trying to keep folks off the streets .. it was a good experience. Went into Cambodia with the Tropic Lightening Division when we cleaned out the Fish Hook and the Parrot's Beak .. also a great memory. Did some interesting things with little bitty folks called Negritos in the jungles of the Philippines for a while .. they were mighty little but mighty powerful folks .. hand made cross bows and other means of dealing with Islamic Terrorists .. great memories. Was reading last night a bunch of Time reports published over the many years on Yeltsin's accomplishments and failures and I remembered being in Red Square when there was a riot during one of the many attempts to dump him .. got some great video footage (taken by a Russian cop) of me wearing an oversized Russian hat and waving a big Commie flag with a hammer and sickle on it. Shouldn't have been there in the first place but since I was .. I figured I might as well get down with Ivan and Boris and Vladimir and try to blend in as best as I could. ;-) Saw lots of things in various African countries that were somewhere between interesting and disgusting .. but they too are memories .. as are visits to Palestinian refugee camps and various places in Israel. And there were other times ... But all that is gonna become history pretty soon .. like around 25 days or so from now .. cause I am gonna settle down and try to forget a lot of what has interested me and what still interests me now .. gonna go back to things that I can better control like Bass Fishing and gardening and such .. and mess around with essential oils. ;-) I'll visit with old Army buddies from time to time and tell war stories about the above and other places .. but my main mission from now till I go under snakes is gonna be trying to prepare my young son on how to get along in the world without being bored or boring. ;-) My family leaves Turkey tomorrow night .. I'm taking them to Istanbul and loading them on a plane for Russia .. we'll meet again in D.C. the first week of June. Things are getting a bit complicated over here now and attitudes are changing on a lot of subjects so I'm thinking that they need to get on out now. I expect that I have one heckuva transition to make going back to the USA .. a lotta things I am not gonna like and a lot about me I'm sure some Americans are not gonna like .. but I will adjust and them that can't adjust to me can just leave me alone. ;-) As for Homeland Security monitoring your surfing .. even if they had the desire they don't have the capability .. if they did have then odds are they woulda knocked on my door a lotta times afore now. ;-) Y'all have a gud'un .. and keep smiling. :-) Butch

I’m a happy guy, but the times haven’t made me so paranoid since Nixon was president.
