It is too bad that I am the only Earth person in my family, we could have gone so much further towards self-sufficiency with this land. My greenhouse collapsed this winter, I miss it. But. The herb collection keeps growing. One nice thing about herbs: Deer don't eat them. OK, they love Valerian. They also enjoyed young Calendula, the naughty critters. But mostly they seem to leave them alone. So more and more I am focusing on growing and processing herbs. Echinacea has been telling me it would enjoy a move, after being in the same bed for more than 10 years. So it will get to inhabit the former greenhouse, and a sunny spot in the perennial border. Its old home was getting a tad shady. Darn trees keep growing. The Maral root ( an Adaptogen from Siberia) that I got as a baby from Richter's last year is thriving, the chocolate mint is going as nuts as any mint, and the new black Cohosh lives, yes! It was not clear last year whether it was going to make it or not. Coltsfoot and Scutellaria, both new additions, are popping up everywhere. Astragalus made it through the winter, yeah! My professional herbalist friend Barbara told me that Lovage root can be used as a substitute for Dong Quai. We have lots of that too. By the way, I like the Bahai. Nice folks with built-in tolerance. Badly persecuted by Iranian Ayatollahs. Ien in the Kootenays http://freegreenliving.com
