Guest guest
Hi Susan, > Hhmmm, another silly thing to ask but I didn't know there are some > roses that don't produce essential oils and I'm not a gardener so I > don't know much about the different varieties. So, what about the > " typical " rose growing on the rose bush outside my house-useful or > just pretty? Not silly at all .. perhaps half the people on this list were asking themselves the same question. Normally (to the dismay of many) I take the time to reply to questions in a manner that precludes folks from having other questions .. but unfortunately, I'm in the middle of lots of preparation for moving and other humma-humma and just didn't have the time to do it in my reply to you. ;-) Many plants that smell nice have no essential oil .. or so little that its not feasible to try to extract it. In some cases, infusion and a few other means of extraction can capture an odor .. if one has a fine nose or a great imagination .. but for some there is no hope. There is a tree here called an Igne that has blossoms (blooming right now) that smell so fine they would make one throw their grandpappy in the crik just to capture that odor .. but all attempts to do this by those who are far wiser than me have failed. As for Roses .. there are perhaps 5 that are capable of rendering an essential oil .. the primary Two being Rosa damascena and Rosa centifolia. Some Roses have an odor due to the pollen .. they have no essential oil. There are 6,000 + varieties of Roses in the world and probably 98% of them were created by man .. through hybridization. > Thanks, Susan Welcome fer'shur .. y'all have a good one .. and keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com >>> This may be silly to ask, but does it matter what type/color of >>> rose is used to make the jam??
