Guest guest
Hi y'all, Not sure who made this post or when it was made .. I saved it for when I might have time to reply. I feel a need to reply because some folks might be reinforced in a false belief about absorption. > I had no trouble believing this as I am a longtime advocate of > Vicks! I am pretty sure that they are sure why .. its about inhalation of chemicals that suppress coughing. Its about what Aromatherapy is really all about. > To stop nighttime coughing in a child (or adult as we found out > personally), put Vicks Vaporub generously on the bottom of the feet > at bedtime, then cover with socks. Its the " bottom of the feet " statement that made me feel a need to address this post .. cause its " bottom of the feet " claims that are made on absorption of EO .. and some folks use garlic as an example of why the false premise is true. First .. the feet and hands are the toughest part of the body .. the Great Everywhere Spirit planned it that way because they were the parts that were most likely to come into contact with toxic substances. So belief of absorption through the feet is belief without merit. What is happening is volatile chemicals are being taken into the body through the olfactory system .. same as what happens when one gets a massage with an EO .. or what happens when one is strapped down in an execution gas chamber. > I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these > findings on the part of their scientists when they were > investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough > medicines in children as compared to alternative therapies like > accupressure. Just happened to tune in AM Radio and picked up this > guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm > than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs, so I > listened. True it is .. and even Vicks recognizes and clarifies why it works. http://www.nmafaculty.org/products/vaporun_label.htm http://www.drugstore.com/qxp10438_333181_sespider/vicks_vaporub/decongestant_and\ _cough_suppressant.htm And other links .. just Google Vicks Vaporub .. And also true it is that most folks who have been on this list a long while will accept that BigPharma has recruited doctors and advertisers to convince us that we need prescription drugs .. and we recognize that in some cases this might be true but in most cases .. even for little ones .. there are many natural of OTC remedies that will work. > Lolly tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and > persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that > it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a > few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, (incredibly annoying) > every few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough free for > hours every night that she used it. Yes .. good it is for sure and happy I am that Lolly or any other youngun can find relief from coughs and such. That warm blanket that enveloped her was a whole bunch of volatile molecules. The reasons why it all works are shown in the link above. The Active Ingredients in Vicks Vaporub will do the same thing if diffused or if placed on a cotton ball and laid on the pillow or rubbed on any part of the body because the body is warm and those chemicals that can suppress coughing (Camphor, Eucalyptus and Menthol) become volatile and are taken into the body through the olfactory system. Vicks says don't add it to hot water and such because it might splatter and cause a burn .. those of us who don't save warning labels telling us to not use electronic appliances while in the bath tub will understand that this CYA statement is needed due to many awards of cash to idiots who brought frivolous lawsuits against this and that company. We don't normally diffuse with boiling water anyway. I'll be 65 in July and I recall my Mother using Vicks Vaporub on me when I was knee high to a grasshopper. Of yea .. Mama used to also put a bunch of Vicks in a pan of water and boil it on the stove. ;-) > So, if you have Children or Grandchildren, pass it on, if you end up > sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by the > effectiveness. Agree .. it will work. If a child is at least two years old or so .. we can get similar results from diffusing Gully Gum Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus smithii) .. and for older younguns and adults .. with Blue Gum Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus). These will provide temporary relief .. if I wanted more than temporary relief .. wanted to kick the Butt of the Big Bad Bug that was causing a problem in the first place, I'd consider diffusing ANY of the Carvacrol rich Origanums .. and maybe even a cocktail containing Origanum and Rosemary, Cineole (Rosmarinus officinalis). Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
Guest guest
Grew up on Vicks myself. loved to rub small amounts around my eyes for the buzz (well one afternoon playtime anyhow). It is still the mainstay of my medicine cabinet with Tiger Balm red/white on hand and a bottle of cajuput by the bed for sniffing. - " Butch Owen " <butchbsi Sunday, May 13, 2007 10:05 PM Inhalation vs Absorption ** Was: Vicks Vaporub > Hi y'all, > > Not sure who made this post or when it was made .. Guest guest
I won't use Vicks, or any product containing petroleum jelly. I make my own with bees wax and oils - real easy and simple. In less than 20 minutes, I can easily make nearly a years supply for my entire family - my kids, and we even use on our dogs when they get bit by flies in the summer. By infusing the oil with healing herbs, I make a great skin balm that was used on all 14 grand kids as a diaper rash ointment and worked wonders for a nephew when he had what the Dr called 'sun burn poisoning' - cleared it up in less than 24 hours. I will not use any kind of petroleum refining by product on my skin Paula Coon www.farmfreshsoapsandcandles.com farmfresahsoapsandcandles > > Grew up on Vicks myself. > loved to rub small amounts around my eyes for the buzz (well one afternoon > playtime anyhow). > It is still the mainstay of my medicine cabinet with Tiger Balm red/white on > hand and a bottle of cajuput by the bed for sniffing. Guest guest
Cool bananas, I don't think I would be putting any Vicks near my or anyone's bottoms soon. LOL For all of us out there, we know not to put these things near mucus membranes, orifices or sensitive skin. P.S lovely web site/home page. Guest guest
Paula, do you use the same ingredients as the Vicks, minus the petroleum jelly or is it your own mixture of ingredients? Guest guest
Thanks Susan, I was going to ask but thought it might be posted on the web site although I didn't find it. I am very interested in this. Bless your heart. Guest guest
> I will not use any kind of petroleum refining by > product on my skin¶ [Dave]: Can't say I blame you, I avoid it as well. But to be fair, petroleum jelly isn't a by-product. It's a very highly-refined, fractionated petroleum product that is specifically made for skin treatment. Even in its crude form, the " rod wax " was used by roughnecks on superficial injuries because they noticed it seemed to hasten healing. And as a cheap wound dressing it probably is one of the most useful substances ever discovered. So, even though many of us prefer to make skin dressings and ointments out of other materials (and for sound reasons), it strikes me that if there are any " good " uses for petroleum, this is probably right up there. Guest guest
I would like to think like that but I doubt it possible today. Think about your underwear, unless it was handmade completely it will contain hundreds of petroleum based products from the elastic to the tag to the stitching and fabrics. LOL, just a happy day jest, please take no offence.
