Anyone here have a Toyota Prius? My in-laws have one and they love it.

In real world driving (including driving up into the mountains) they do

actually get 50+ miles to the gallon!

I'm just looking to get some more opinions from those who own one,

'cause it is a very enticing vehicle to me.

Since I don't live in a snowy/mountain climate any longer, and I don't

do shows anymore, and I only end up lugging full loads of cargo a few

times a year, and it is not a diesel engine that I could convert to

bio-diesel, on so many levels its not worth it having my gas guzzling

Ford Exploder anymore - especially with gas now hovering at $3/gallon

and no sign of it going back down at the moment.

Hi Chris,

I don't own one, but my sis bought the Camry Hybrid, because the

Prius was to small for her 6'4 " husband. Her best friend is on her

2nd Prius, absolutely loves it. She gets 50 in city driving,

Columbia Mo, and 50+ on the hiway. Camry gets 35-40 city. My BIL

said if he fit in the Prius they would have gotten that. They both

said, test drive one, and you'll buy it they have one for you.

My BIL is a car nut, we call his garage the Garagemahal, I personally

ws dumbfounded when he went for the hybrid, this is a GTO guy, NASCAR

all the way. Again, he drives it, but OK he has his weekend baby,

and drives a 4W drive for business during the week. My sis is sold,

and won't drive anything else, I rode in the Camry last weekend, we

were ther for her graduation, She finally finished her PhD in Special

Ed, (Had to get the kids grown and through college before she went

back). I thought the ride was nice, and no difference in pick up.

Hope that helps

Lynn

Hi Chris,

If you've seen your in-laws Prius you might already know about great features

like backing

up camera, GPS guidance system, airbags all around, and Bluetooth connection for

your

cellphone. These are things we got but I didn't care about when we bought the

first and

wouldn't do without on the next. We bought an '06 Prius last September. I've

never been a

car enthusiast before but I really love this car. (especially the milage and the

GPS) We

bought our second in April.

We live in southeast Michigan and all the driving is on flat streets. Mostly, I

drive on roads

w/45mph speed limit - mostly GO, very little stop. This is about the worst use

of the

Hybrid features because the electric motor takes over more of the work in stop &

go traffic

- that really kicks up the milage. So, in my case, I get less impressive milage.

(45mpg) The

AC can cope with hot days very well but I'd seriously try for one of the lighter

colored ones

if I lived in TX.

When we spend the weekend in Pittsburgh, (very hilly, more stop & go) we get in

the mid

50's. I think to regularly get in the high 50's or low 60's you'd need to live

right in a big

city. That's where we get that excellent milage. (Chicago)

Still, no matter where you drive, this car has very low emissions and I think

that's actually

more important to me.

Here are some drawbacks:

*It's small

*They are manufactured outside of the US.

*You might miss the mighty power of your Explorer.

*It's still more expensive than a non-hybrid car. Although, the price has come

down a lot

and many more are available now. If you get one soon, you'd still qualify for a

small tax

credit from the Fed Gov. Even though we got the $3150 tax credit on the '06 and

only

$887.50 tax credit on the '07, we still paid less for the '07 because Toyota has

significantly lowered the price. Since there are so many more available now

your dealer

will probably come down even more. (ours did)

I see this as interim technology. I expect by the time we wear out these,

something MUCH

better will be available. Right now, to get better milage and lower emissions

and excellent

reliability, we have to sacrifice power, size, loyalty to US workers, and money.

I read in

Consumers Reports that the Prius has the highest owner satisfaction of any car

in US.
