Guest guest
For all of you gardeners out there: We have noticed a bunch of " foam like " clusters (generally dime size) all over weeds, rose bushes and other plants outside. They honestly look a little like saliva! Are these spider mite or aphid eggs?? They tend to gravitate towards/near the rose bushes. I was out last night cutting weeds and they were all over the place. I cannot find anything online about them. Any info??? For the life of me I cannot remember the name of the insect, but I'm thinking they are the homes of larvae which hatch out into a kind of fly, like a caddis. You'll see them on plants like gumweed and goldenrod quite a bit. Guest guest
Sounds like spit bugs to me... in the center of the foam you should come across a pale green bug.... easiest way to deal with them is to hose them off. The foam or spit is to keep their predators away from them (I think)/. Shelley Here's some info on them http://www.ivyhall.district96.k12.il.us/4TH/KKHP/1insects/spittlebug.html Nikki Sherritt wrote: > For all of you gardeners out there: > > We have noticed a bunch of " foam like " clusters (generally dime size) > all over weeds, rose bushes and other plants outside. Guest guest
They are called spittle bugs. If you remove the " saliva " you will find a bug. Guest guest
Hi Dave and All: We have those exact same things here on our property in Oregon. They look just like what you are describing here and I just use the power nozzle on the hose for them and then (didn't know there was a green worm in the foamy part) just drown whatever I felt had to be in it. I was told by a neighbor that they will suck out the goodness from your plants and to hose them and drown them. It seems to work. Are you in a forested area too ? I have been doing exactly what you have done-spraying them off. It was fascinating to actually blow off the " spittle " and see them hiding. I have read that they are generally harmless, but if they feed off of any kind of sap or liquid coming from a plant, then ultimately that cannot be good... I hear they like fir trees and juniper, but they seem to gravitate to any weeds we have out there. anyway, learned so much this week. thanks everyone for the education. it is appreciated!
