HERBAL BATHS

An herbal bath can be made just for a specific part of the body, such as the

hands, hips or feet, or can be a full- body bath. Because the skin is the

largest digestive organ in the body, it will readily absorb the herbal

properties in the bath and affect the parts being submerged, but in a gentle

way. Of course the stronger the bath made, the greater and more rapid the effect

will be. In the treating of infants, baths are especially useful and effective

as the baby will assimilate what it needs through the skin without needing to

take the herbs internally. Likewise, this is a safe method for treating the

elderly.

Baths can help stimulate blood circulation, warm the body, heal infections and

inflammations, help headaches, lower fevers, calm the nerves and relax, relieve

chills and eliminate aches, pains, cramps and spasm, to mention just a few of

their uses. In general, the less sever the condition, the less strong and

frequent the bath needs to be, and vice versa. The effect the bath will have on

the body depends on the herbs included, and they can be used singly, or several

in combination. The only limits are your imagination.

HOW TO MAKE AN HERBAL BATH

Method 1—yields a stronger bath:

Chop up or grate desired herbs.

Make an infusion (tea), as appropriate.

Add tea to hot bath water. Soak and enjoy.

Method 2—yields a weaker bath:

Chop up or grate desired herbs.

Place in a thin cloth bag and tie closed.

Tie bag under bath faucet and let hot water pour through bag in filling up

tub, or simply place bag in tub. Soak and enjoy.

Amounts: If using Method 1, make 2 gallons of herb tea. If using Method2, use

2-6 ounces of herbs, depending on strength desired and herbs used. Weaker herbs

need larger quantities while stimulating herbs can be used more sparingly.

Doses: Take baths as needed.

Storage: Bath herbs are not stored after use. A bath may be made from any

herbs left on hand and is especially good use for herbs stored a long time when

their medicinal actions have weakened, usually within a year or two (depending

on the form in which they are stored).
