Guest guest
Can someone please tell me or point me in the the correct direction to find out how and when to harvest lavender? I haven't a clue and hate to see it go to waste again. Right now, the plants are in full bloom and beautiful. Thanks, Valerie
Guest guest
I always try to cut and dry mine before the flowers are in full bloom or just starting to bloom. I can't believe how much I got from my plants this year ! Now if only my chamomile would do half as good ! Don't know what happened, but every year it seems that less and less of the chamomile comes back each year Paula ....... in Michigan www.farmfreshsoapsandcandles.com farmfreshsoapsandcandles > > Can someone please tell me or point me in the the correct direction to > find out how and when to harvest lavender? Guest guest
Excuse my ignorance, but do I just cut the whole stem close to the bottom, or up at the top then put on a screen to dry? I am assuming after they dried, the " buds " will just come off? Any other tips?!? Glad to hear your chamomile is doing so well! Mine is ok but basil has taken over everything. One can only use so much pesto...LOL Unless of course, there are some other good uses?! Guest guest
I cut the stem and put them in a brown paper bag and lay the bag on my dashboard and they are dry in a day or 2. I dry all my herbs this way. I use lots of basil and oregano in spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce .... It goes good with anything tomato Paula ....... in Michigan www.farmfreshsoapsandcandles.com farmfreshsoapsandcandles > Excuse my ignorance, but do I just cut the whole stem close to the > bottom, or up at the top then put on a screen to dry? Guest guest
Paula, I am in MI, too - near Ann Arbor. I cannot keep chamomile. Last winter I lost my lavender and started a new plant this year. My herbs are on the south side of my house, well-protected from winter winds (actually the dryer vent is nearby). I would like to have more lavender but don't know where to plant it! A friend asked me to make my lavender-rosemary soap for her daughter's bridesmaids (in October). JanG in MI On Behalf Of Paula Coon Wednesday, June 27, 2007 10:24 AM RE: Harvesting Lavender? Guest guest
I will try this tomorrow. It is extremely hot and humid here so I should have no problem with your method. Thanks Paula.... Guest guest
every month we have a lunch meeting at Cabela's in Dundee for soap and candle makers - you'll have to come join us one day ! It's always the 3rd Wed of the month at 1:30. This year my lavender has really out done itself ! I have harvested at least 4 times more than last year.My chamomile was doing great with more coming back every year but this year I think there is only 1 lonely plant out there I divided my chocolate mint already this year but with all this heat and rain we've had, it's about ready to divided again. My comfrey is now ready for it's 3rd cutting this year. Paula ....... in Michigan www.farmfreshsoapsandcandles.com farmfreshsoapsandcandles > > Paula, I am in MI, too - near Ann Arbor.
