Guest guest
Does anyone know what oils I might use mixed together with water in a sprayer that might deter the house/barn flies from hanging around? I have used other oils mixed with water to spray that has successfully repelled mosquitoes and biting bugs. It doesn't last a long time but usually only need it for short periods in the evening and morning for the horses. Really don't want to have to use chemicals around the stock. Thanks, Dianne
Guest guest
A few years back I had a very heavy fly infestation. You couldn't sit outside because they were so bad. I got a fly trap. This is a plastic gallon jug with a top screwed on that had openings in it for them to fly in but it was painted black so they didn't even try to go back out that way. It came with a scent that was suppose to attract them but it did not work. So I put a little wet cat food and a little water into the jug and screwed on the top. It did stink but it worked. In a months time I had 2/3 of a gallon full of dead flies. It sure was great to be able to sit on the deck with out flies wanting to crawl on you. Guest guest
Zo I've bought those (big stinkies) before and didn't have any luck with them around the barn. Will try the cat food in them which we have in good supply. Problem we have is there is a tomato packing plant nearby and they dump unwanted tomatoes in cow fields for the cows to eat and the flies feast and thrive in the mess. We keep the barn sanitary as can be done but can't control what neighboring farms do and the flies that come from them. Thanks, D Don't get soaked. Guest guest
I bet that smells good. I hung the fly catcher I had out in the middle of the back yard between the trees and added more moisture to the stinky mess when it got dry. I was amazed at how many that it caught. - " Dianne France " <darby366 Saturday, July 14, 2007 8:14 AM Re: help.....need natural repelant for barn flies > Zo > > I've bought those (big stinkies) before and didn't have any luck with > them around the barn. They are beneficial insects that provide biological fly control killing the immature flies (fly pupa) before they ever have a chance to mature to the adult stage that annoys people and animals. I thought they sounded too good to be true, but the low cost made it feasible to give them a try. This is my second year to use them, and am very impressed by how effective they are at doing their job. I was a little late getting started with them this year so I doubled up the quantity for my first shipment and immediately got the situation under control. I purchase mine from Spalding-Labs.com Their website has very informative brochures in pdf format (easy to print and review). And I called the company before I initially ordered, the folks there were very helpful and easy to talk to. Not an instant solution to your problem, but based on my experience it is definitely worth looking into. Margie
Guest guest
Howdy. I don't know if anyone suggested it yet. A jar with a hole punched in the lid leaving jagged edges inside just large enough for flies to get in. A string tied to jar and suspended. Placed in jar is small amount of rotting vegetable or other organic matter. Smell doesn't escape or do flies. Appreciate the resource and will try looking them up. My husband is so allergic to the chemcials we used to use for insect control I really am looking for some more holistic answers. Thank you, Dianne
