Guest guest
Tainted Peanut Butter Plant Freshens Up ConAgra Faces Lawsuits Over Salmonella Sickness POSTED: 3:30 pm CDT August 6, 2007 SYLVESTER, Ga. -- The Georgia plant where thousands of peanut butter jars linked to a salmonella outbreak were filled is expected to reopen. ConAgra Foods said it is in the final stages of getting the plant up and running after spending at least $15 million on renovations. The plant was shut down in February when jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter were linked to the outbreak that made more than 600 people sick. The company said a leaky roof and a faulty sprinkler provided moisture that awakened dormant salmonella bacteria in the plant. The company said it has fixed those problems. The renovated plant will also have a new design to better separate raw materials from the finished product. ConAgra still faces lawsuits in several states. Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press.
