Guest guest
I was wondering. If you open an internet only business, do you need any type of licensing for it? Like for example, if I wanted to sell homemade soap and do so only on the internet, What would I need?

You still need a business license, and sales tax registration (assuming your state has a sales tax) product liability insurance is also a good thing!!! Guest guest
I've been trying to get a business license as well, and they're telling me I have to have a Fire Inspection on my building, then also I can't manufacture items in my home, so therefor I'd have to rent space in town in an office bldg.~ boy they sure make it tough~ I even asked if I purchased soap and lotion already made and just bought a distributor license could I do that and the lady at the counter said no, then I would be a distrbutor and we can't issue a distribution liscense in the county> So what's a person to do? Rent Space only or is there a way around all this? I have my insurance, just need the stupid business license, ha I even tried to get a business license under my state manicurist license~lol Sindy ---- Original Message ----- Re: selling products You still need a business license, and sales tax registration (assuming your state has a sales tax) product liability insurance is also a good thing!!! Check with your state, a vendors license is pretty inexpensive.
Guest guest
Hi Sindy I'm not sure where you live but all that red tape sounds downright un-American. Maybe there is someone more helpful that you can talk to. When I went downtown here in the People's Republic of Berkeley (which I say with all fondness for my home community) the guy asked me if I was going to be selling out of my home and I said, " Well, uh, yeah, I guess " . And he said that zoning in my neighborhood doesn't permit that. But then he kinda winked and said, " But as long as your neighbors don't complain nobody will be the wiser. " Cool guy! It might be a good idea to call your city's Chamber of Commerce and talk to someone there, They might be able to give you some good advice. There must be a way around all that stuff. Good luck! Guest guest
it's different in every state. I'd start by calling your local county clerk's office - that's where I had to go to get my DBA (permit to Do Business As) They will/should give you information on what else you need to do in your state Paula ....... in Michigan www.farmfreshsoapsandcandles.com farmfreshsoapsandcandles I was wondering. Guest guest
<snip> Like for example, if I wanted to sell homemade soap and do so only on the internet, What would I need? You would still need to get a tax id#, and report any taxes on products sold within your state. Check your state government site to find out the regs. Here in TX we get our sales tax # from the state comptroller's office. Also have to register the business with the county we are in. Some states require more or less to sell. There are Avon and Mary Kay vendors everywhere. They are re-sellers/distributers. Also, I find it hard to believe that there are no crafters or craft fairs in your state or county. Just because someone is behind the counter doesn't mean they know jack. Joanne
