Howdy Leslie,

Maybe. It will depend on how rapid the change is .. if its rapid then

agriculture in countries that now have poor soil and climate conditions will

be in worse shape. Russia and other northern countries have select crops

and normally one season .. so there will be no time for natural selection or

adaptation of new crops .. plus they will have to deal with new insect and

plant disease threats. Russia is not looking at Climate Change and being a

potential bonus for their agricultural production capability. However, if

the climate change is gradual then they can do some things to protect their

capability .. like introducing some hearty species that have longer planting

to harvest cycles .. which will result in higher yields per acre.

Southernmost countries .. like those in Africa below the Sahara .. are

already in the " Basket Case " category .. have been for around 50 years or so

... rapid or gradual change in those areas will just make bad

conditions worse because planting to harvest cycles will shorten in any

case.

Maybe .. but I doubt it. Adaptation of plant life to different climates has

far more variables that must be in sync than just temperature. Granted, I

can nursemaid a Banana Tree or an Avocado plant here in Tennessee but I

could never make it a commercial endeavor .. its all about natural selection

and evolution of a host of organisms .. not just temperature or rainfall.

Perhaps even the dear Myrrh may be regenerated,

Maybe .. but it would take centuries for Commiphora myrrha to adapt to

cooler climates even if they are warming .. just as it would take humans

from cooler climates centuries to adapt to conditions that allow the growing

of Myrrh .. and by that time odds are good that both the Myrrh and the

humans will have made major biological changes.

(Just trying for a positive spin)

Nothing wrong with that .. I'm just taking a Devil's Advocate approach. ;-)

If we look at most southern hemisphere countries we find that they are the

poorest .. and one of the main causes is poor climatic conditions. Many

have very little farmland .. for example .. Somalia has but 2% arable land.

Most of the Middle East countries would be similar to Somalia if not for

petrol. In time they will probably be seeking to import food and water with

their petrodollars .. but in a market that has no surplus. No credible

leader would allow their citizens to be without if they had the power to

take what was needed from those who had it. I'm hoping for some quick time

alternatives to fossil fuels cause we're now financing probable future

threats that will make Al Queda look like a bunch of Mouseketeers.

However .. if we could realize a buncha Cobras, Crocodiles, Elephants and

such in New York City it would give the Drive By Shooters something else to

shoot at .. and most folks would be chewing Khat instead of snorting coke or

smoking crack, which would make users become lethargic instead of aggressive

... and the average lifespan of humans would drop down to maybe 45 years or

so, which would help resolve some of the problems of overpopulation .. so

there are some positive notes here. ;-)

But not to worry y'all .. odds are slim that any of us will be around to see

the changes because even if they are considered to be rapid they will still

take a mighty long time .. our younguns and more so, their younguns will be

better equipped to adapt than we are.
