Guest guest
Yo Paula, I would have to argue this : " The other main thing I DON'T do is > vaccinate " > Don't know where you live but here not vaccinating against rabies is > against the law and not only will you get fined, animal control (the dog > catchers) can and will take your dog. > On her web site .. at http://www.kuhlmanhaus.com/Raw%20Diet.htm .. she writes: " Our dogs and puppies are given no vaccines other than rabies (as required by law). Research has shown that vaccinations can damage the dogs immune system and contribute to many other diseases and illnesses down the road. It is also believed that vaccines often do little or nothing to actually prevent the disease for which they are given. Please research this topic thoroughly before deciding to vaccinate your dog. See the websites listed below. Ask for *and read* the package inserts for any vaccine before allowing any vet to vaccinate your animals - they are very telling. " I think she is onto a good thing .. this raw meat and bones diet. I say this because of two reasons.. one reason is speculative and the other is based on information from a professional vet friend who I totally respect .. and for me that's saying much because I am not impressed by many medical types. In my youth .. and still today around my home neck of the woods .. farm dogs fended for themselves. Pigs got all the table scraps and dogs ate what they could find in the hills, fields and forests. Buying dog food was and still is not a norm. The dogs owned by my grandparents and uncles and others in those times were generally quite healthy .. always lean .. and lived pretty long lives .. some as much as 15 years or so. The foraged and hunted and were slick enough to catch enough critters to fill their bellies .. might be squirrels, rabbits, possums, coons, sometimes skunks ;-) , foxes, fish, crawdads, and even rats, mice and some insects .. most loved to chase and eat grasshoppers. The second reason I believe this is because of what I was told by an Air Force Vet in Incirlik,Turkey. This man was highly respected by all .. he would come into his clinic in the middle of the night to treat animals .. and it was not his primary mission. Military vets are on the job to take care of Military Working Dogs .. and the pets of people who live on the military base .. those who live off base can get appointments on a space available basis .. but this fellow would never refuse to come in for an emergency. I had two cats .. one rescued from under a boat near a fish restaurant in Mersin and the other from a street flood in Ankara. Late one evening, I returned from a one week trip and found that my Mersin Tabby (Hobbes) had a urinary tract infection .. death it is for male cats in just hours if not properly treated. My maid had been feeding and watering and such my two cats while I was gone but she had no idea what was bothering Hobbes .. I had been warned to look out for this problem long before it happened. I called the Vet around midnight and he told me to come in IMMEDIATELY .. I did and he treated Hobbes and I continued to treat him and he got well. The Vet told me that the problem was not unusual and the best prevention was a difficult one .. because cats had become domesticated and no longer ate healthy diets .. like bird bones and feathers and entrails and beaks and bugs and whatever felines ate before mankind started treating them like members of the family. After that, I started sprucing up the diets of Hobbes and Shadow (who was a sweet, evil, jet black bitch from Hell) with a few sparrows and wild pigeons and other non game birds I would shoot in the hills and fields. Hobbes and Shadow are American citizens now. When I planned to return to the US and attend law school .. in 1995 .. I gave them to a neighbor who loved them .. a young Airman and his wife, who were being reassigned to Arizona. They too knew the Vet and I told them what he said and what I had been doing .. recommended they continue to do it. I changed my mind at the last minute and stayed in Turkey but over the next two years or so I often communicated with them via email and they had continued this diet .. Hobbes and Shadow were very healthy cats. Hobbes was as sweet and aloof as he had ever been .. and Shadow was as much of an evil, devious, sweet bitch as she had ever been. ;-) Paula ..... in Michigan > www.farmfreshsoapsandcandles.com > farmfreshsoapsandcandles > Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
