That's what I've always thought in all the time I've used Gmail, then only last week I spotted the little blue squares with an arrow in them (on the right side, just above the " to " field) and thought " whats that then? " clicked it - and - Presto! New window opened to reply in, leaving the *in box* open in another tab, so you can flip back and forth between your reply and check for new mail at the same time. Or open other mails (same way with the blue square thing) to refer to or reference from. If you have IE7 they open in new tabs and you can just click in and out of the tabs.
