I have the journal. I like Tulips and there was none .. and I like Blackberries and only had two bushes .. now I have 5 (3 varieties) plus 5 healthy Blueberry bushes (two varieties), 2 Apple trees (different varieties) and all have produced fruit in the past. I see where the owner twixt me and the old doctor took out some trees ... there is now 1 Cherry tree, 1 Pear tree and 1 Apricot tree and he said he had never gotten any fruit from them .. reason is .. cause they need cross-pollination .. so I gotta plant one each of a different variety of them soon. Feller knew crap about growing things. ;-) Also gonna plant some more Commercial Honeysuckles .. got one big climbing bush on a trestle now but its not enough. Unfortunately, no wild Honeysuckles on the property. My Hummingbirds love the Honeysuckles and if I get more we will save a bunch cause Tanya is using 2 cups of sugar a day making nectar for the 40 or so resident Hummers here. Also gonna try again (for the 3rd time in my life .. all attempts failed) to TRANSPLANT some Wild Dogwoods this Winter .. gonna put them in a raised bed so they drain well and surround them with Georgia Azaleas. Folks in this area have generally had bad luck transplanting them so I wanna take on the challenge again. ;-) My main thing come Spring will be a vegetable garden, a herb garden and a Rose Garden. Got a few Rose bushes blooming now but around half of them not our favorites .. Tanya is gonna pick the Rose bushes ceptin' I am gonna get some Damask Roses .. gotta order them from outside .. none in Paris, TN. Also gonna plant a crap pot full of Rosemary and Lavender on both sides of the house. Gonna take this further than just luck .. different plants (even vegetables) like different kinds of soil .. our soil here is pretty acidic so I'm gonna have to split the gardens up into different plots and adjust the soil differently in some of those plots. With the price of vegetables in the USA I figger I'll make more tending a garden than I will working the I-Net .. and considering the hassles of the EO industry it might be more fun selling mousetraps than it is EO. ;-) > I have Garden envy.... NEXT year however...... > I said that every year for the 19 years I was in Turkey .. but them days is history now. Talked about all this with a buddy from Georgia last night .. we worked together in Turkey for a number of years. He said that he had been waiting for me to tell him I'd taken a contract with DynCorp or Vinnell or KBR, etc. But after all I had told him about the above, he was convinced, but surprised, that I had really hung up my sword and picked up a hoe. Reckon its true that Old Soldiers never die .. they just fade away in a garden patch somewhere. ;-) -- > Cheers! > Kathleen Petrides > The Woobey Queen > Http://www.woobeyworld.com <http://www.woobeyworld.com> > Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch .. http://www.AV-AT.com
Guest guest
Okay, so you're way ahead of me and how the heck could one NOT know that those trees needed cross pollination... SHEESH! About your veggies and such, I'm mentioning this on the very slight off chance that it hasn't occurred to you... Raised beds. Makes the changing acidity etc much more manageable and you can make them the size to suit your reach, gardeing habits etc... stay away from old railway ties... I mention this not really for you but for others who are told that they make great bedding edges... they are full of toxins which will leach into your garden patch. Now I like a person who is organized to have everything written down in a book, I don't have it in me for that kind of organization but it sure makes it easy to see what one needs in the line of flowers! Have fun with it, sounds like you're way ahead... oh, if you're a night on the porch person, don't forget your moon flowers, night blooming jasmine etc... gardens aren't just for the day time. ;-) And hummers are pigs! Gorgeous antisocial PIGS! ;-) If hummers ruled the world... they wouldn't, it would be complete and total anarchy! LOL K On 9/21/07, Butch Owen <butchowen wrote: > > > > -- Cheers! Guest guest
The Muscaria are blooming beautifully right now here. Across the road in the bush are remnants of the first settlers gardens. Long gone are the buildings, all that remain are some home made brick and odd and ends. However come spring. The Muscaria and Freesia, Daffodil and Jonquil are still coming up and blooming more than 140 years after the settlement was moved.
