Guest guest
Hey Folks, I want to tell everyone Happy Autumn (as of yesterday .. and Happy Spring to those group members on the flip side of the world)! So, what is growing in your garden (or what are you planning on doing in it in the coming weeks)? In my part of Gulf Coast TX its still summer, and will be for the foreseeable future *lol* (highs are ONLY in the low 90's now! Wheeee! I am helping my 4 yr old son's school get an edible garden project started for Autumn and we're going to plant cool weather crops in the coming weeks, such as broccoli, carrots, lettuce, spinach, fennel, chard, etc ... My garden needs lots of work at this point in the year .. its a bit overgrown and neglected as I let it go during the height of summer (sorry, but I wasn't EVEN about to go outside and garden in the 24/7 Dante's Inferno that is Houston in the season of summer, with a heat index of over 90F degrees before sunrise, and get eaten alive by the skeeters, fire ants, etc ...). Thankfully its beginning to get reasonable enough now to go out and play for a few minutes at a time *lol* Anyway .. I was nosy and wanted to see what everyone else has happening! *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com
Guest guest
I was going to post this info in a separate post, but Chris gives me the perfect segue . . . I, too, have areas that are overgrown and need attention (just because we're way up North doesn't mean we didn't have a mean July/Aug heatwise) . . . Areas that we didn't plant or haven't yet been planted with trees/shrubs/perennials are rife with weed seeds at this point. I've discovered a marvelous natural way to remove weed seeds from garden soil during the off months and it turns to fertilizer after killing the weed seeds. How wonderful is that? It's called Corn Gluten Meal and is available from several organic gardening sites. I am purchasing from our commercial garden company here in Snohomish and intend to cover the many areas that need it, and it might be available at regular garden stores as well. One of the brand names - CocadoodleDoo manufactured by Pure Barnyard, but you can websearch or ask for Corn Gluten Meal at your garden store. Best applied twice a year (won't harm existing plants, so it's great for areas that you haven't weeded that get full of weed seeds because you didn't get the weeding done and they went to seed-groan). Corn Gluten Meal turns to a gel that causes weed seeds to burst, then disintegrates and becomes nitrogen fertilizer. Several organic farmers around here tell me its great - anyone here have experience with it? This Autumn we are concentrating on getting more of the 'bones' into this large place - large trees, bushes, walkways, paths, steps . . . Some of the larger things going in are more Conifers, some flashy deciduous trees that have aromatic blossoms or good fall color and more lilacs, vitex, butterfly bush, other aromatic bushes . . . I also just ordered about 750 bulbs, so I guess we know who'll be on their knees for a while! :-) Well, maybe some of them will end up in pots. Be Well, Marcia Elston http://www.wingedseed.com http://www.aromaconnection.org " Give thanks for a little and you will find a lot. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Last year I almost got 1 head of lettuce out of my garden, got some spinach, and a whole passle of peppers. This year... HMMMM. I think I'll wait until Feb 22 and plant. I'm getting ready to fertilize and organize. Unfortunately when we should be planting I'm ready for the renfest. and don't want to do too much to wear myself out. But I do have multiple mints and creeping thyme and Ditany of Crete oregano and marjoram. I also have a peach tree, a satsuma orange tree, a Loquat tree, and pomegranate and also passion fruit vine.
