Guest guest
The difference in exchange rates never put me off buying from the U.S., its the postage that puts me off, that and the wonderful Canadian Government who insists on ripping open every package then taping it back up and charging me $5 for doing it, PST and GST taxes ontop of that and then they charge me taxes on the Canadian equivalent of the item. So, If someone states on the package that the item is worth $100 ( I had to pay taxes on the $100 Canadian equivalent). It's rarely worth it. What I would LOVE to see is the price of cars dropping to the USD rate, we currently pay between 2 and $20,000 more for a car in Canada than in the USA and this is even on cars built here in Ontario. There is currently a lawsuit going on in Toronto where the car makers are being sued over this issue, I hope the everyday guy wins. I would also like to see books come down in price, we pay $25 Canadian for a $20 USD book. The dollars may be at par but we won't see it until the prices on items get straightened out. Guest guest
Hi all, At least Canada Post is realistic - UPS charges a lot (way, way more than $5) to clear a package, and if the right paperwork is not with it, then they charge gst and duty - and wont refund the duty, they make you apply to the government to get it back - I would not let them clear a package for me if my life depended on it. Not that long ago, when the canadian dollar was worth about 40cents usd, we just sucked it up and did it anyway - The big winners right now, are those brave souls who line up to cross the border, which is getting more and more difficult all the time. The retailers on the us side of the border are doing well, but the canadian retailers who relied on american tourists are looking at a bleak future. The long time prognosis seems to be that the canadian dollar will remain at par, or even a little lower, for the foreseeable future. However, the banks are the ones most making out, with their extra charges. I wired $900 usd to a canadian bank yesterday, and the amount actually credited was $837 cdn.
