Guest guest
Hi everyone! I am a new member and am finding all of this a bit overwhelming, but here goes....I am interested in growing oats for my bath and face scrubs. Does anyone know the Genus and Specie that I should look for? Are they difficult to grow? I live in zone 5. Thanks and looking forward to reading your responses over the next couple of days. Guest guest
Marnie, I would actually be asking the county extension office(agriculture) in your county to find out what oats would grow well in your area. They can also test your soil for you...Here's a search I did on line for you in zone 5. Guest guest
many grains are now genetically modified and are only have the FDA approval as animal feed. You would have to look long and hard to find organic seeds in a quantity small enough and then they won't come cheap. You would have to plant quite a bit before it would be worthwhile. Do you have the space and time it would take ? I'm not belittling your idea, but I get the feeling you have no clue as to how much time and work it take. I grew up on farms and many of my relatives still farm and have a pretty good idea of the amount of work needed to raise an amount to make it worthwhile and would never attempt to grow my own If you are in 'farm country' I'd suggest talking to a few of the local farmers about what type of grain they raise and buying some from them if it approved for humans.
