Drug Resistant Bacteria Are Mixing

Howdy Kathryn,

I was wondering if anyone else had heard of the research done by a

> teacher at Princeton. I saw something on PBS about how she is attempting to

I read something on that .. a news article somewhere. Scientific research

moves forward and backward .. best we can hope for (I reckon) is at least 2

steps forward for every 1 step backward.

The link Chris sent .. on drug resistant staph .. discussed the mixing of

the two strains of this killer. One was bad enough but now we have two that

when combined are even more potent.

Someone else mentioned that we need to avoid overuse of antibiotics .. for

sure this is a fact. Films about mutant this and that began long ago .. in

the early days it was about mutations due to radiation because the world

feared radiation after WW II .. these films moved from creating dangerous

monsters to creating super heroes .. then to creating bacterial and viral

critters that could destroy mankind. All of these films were based on a

certain amount of good science. Back in the early 1940s there was a lot of

research that supported mutation of viral and bacterial critters. Research

moved forward and bucked up against lots of controversy regarding Darwinian

principles .. but it kept moving forward and it was pretty conclusive that

some bacterial cells did mutate when exposed to toxic conditions but not all

of them followed a set path. Those that were able to adapt were mutants ..

some simply adapted to protect themselves from hostile conditions but some

became stronger and became more resistant to conditions that they had not

been exposed to. This process continues and will likely continue till the

Earth turns into a Super Nova.

Evolution begins with survival of the fittest .. them that can protect

themselves from the slings and arrows and chemical or biological weapons

used to slay them are stronger than those who fell along the wayside ..

and the probability of their offspring being more capable of adapting is

great. Researchers are aware of this .. they understand that they are

playing with fire when they interfere .. but they must move forward with

their research. I think that the odds of evolution slowing down and

allowing critters to coexist are pretty slim .. seems to me that if that

were not the case then evolution would not be the driver of the train ..

there would be no forward momentum.

You have a goat farm so you understand that certain critters would like to

eat your goats. If we teach the lion to lay down with the goat we ain't

gonna have many lions left soon .. unless we teach them to eat grass. When

that happens we're gonna upset the balance of nature in this or that manner.

My opinion is that evolution demands that the strong use the weak .. that's

why (in the Animal Kingdom) there are higher populations of the weak than

there are the strong. Too few crocodiles and lions means too many

wildebeest .. too few wildebeest means a loss of crocodiles and lions .. and

so forth.

I have been thinking that I might need a goat to roam around my back lot ..

keep the fence row clean. ;-)

Yep .. they pull up the grass by the roots .. make it tough for lots of

other critters to survive. ;-)

Y'all keep smiling. :-)
