Guest guest
Hello, everyone, my name is Ljilja, from Belgrade, Serbia, and till now I've only been reading your post and learning from you, but at this moment I need urgent help. I have a female dog, Lola, she is a 'mix' of a Caucasian shephard and our local breed, a shephard from Shara Mountain, two very similar breeds, but I want to give you full info. It's a big, mountain shepherd dog with all the characteristics of the kind - strong, endurable, used to low temperatures, and she kept most of them, being that she is living outside ( not in the house, I mean). She is 3 years old. At the time of her first ' period' - her mating period, I mean - at the age of 9 months, she got some inflammation which was manifested with a ' vaginal prolapse', size of an egg at that time. A vet did a surgery on her then, to remove all of her reproductive organs, and had a very hard time, she was bleeding very much, several times during the surgery he thought of euthanizing her, but his assistent-his daughter- begged him to continue, and our Lola stayed alive. Soon after the surgery, there was this prolapse again, and up to this moment it was never fully withdrawn, only varied in size. It was usualy much bigger when it would be her 'period', twice a year - the vet swears he removed it all, but my male dogs were regularly ' in love with her' at those moments. She also has trouble relieving herself, she makes this very sad noise while doing it, so we don't give her bones or any food that would in any way cause constipation. She was given the antibiotics, the whole therapy several times, and it usualy helped her, for a while. Some half a year ago, she was feeling bad, she hasn't ate for a week and turned all yelowish - the inside of her ears, the tongue, the eyes. The vet insissted that we euthanize her, but when we came with the lethal injection, she came out of her house looking better, waving her tail, and got well in a day or two. The thing is that noone lives on the estate where my dogs are, the 4 of them, but it's close to my home, and we go there every day, but we are not there all the time. However, for couple of months now, this prolapse is much bigger, the size of a smaller melon, and absolutely nothing we tried helps, and every vet that we addressed to says the euthanasia is the only solution. Her behavior also varies, apart from the thing hanging beneath her tail, she is sometimes running around, eating well, playing with her mates, and the other times laying in her house, refusing food, and seems very distant. I can not imagine in how much pain she is, and the euthanasia is coming up like more and more certain move, but I would like to ask you if you have any idea, any suggestion before we make that final move from where there's no turning back. The vets here are not into any alternative medicine, so you are the only people I can address to on that matter. I forgot to mention that it smells awfull, like a rotten meat, more and more; erlier, when it would prolapse, it smelled of fresh meat. Her mother had the same issue, only she got it later, after giving birth a couple of times, but her owner didn't have the nerves to deal with it more, so he euthanized her very soon. I guess I've told you everything, I'm begging you to give it some thought, then if nothing else, just say a prayer for her. THANK YOU Ljilja
Guest guest
Ljilja, that is such a sad story. I have to believe you did not have a good surgeon. The only case of vaginal prolapse I've ever seen in a dog was corrected by surgery with no further problems. Of course, the dog had to have a hysterectomy. (Actually this sounds like uterine prolapse, not vaginal prolapse). I am afraid that euthanasia may be the kindest option, but I wish you the best of luck. Guest guest
Dear Ljilja, My heart goes out to you, as someone with two dogs I dearly love. This is not the kind of thing that alternative medicine can address. It is a surgical problem. Frankly I don't understand what is prolapsing if the sexual organs (including the vagina) were removed. And it sounds like you are puzzled by that too. You might want to make one last attempt to talk to the vet and have him/her explain exactly what is going on (complete with diagrams if needed) and why it can't be fixed. If there isn't a vet who can fix this with surgery, I think the kindest thing to do is to euthanize your dog. She may have some good days, but it also sounds like she has mostly miserable days. And things aren't improving, only getting worse. It's a heartbreaking decision to have to make. I had to euthanize my two cats with kidney failure and believe me, I blamed myself and felt guilty for a long time. But i had to make my decision based on what was best for them to stop their suffering. I wish the best for you and your dog.
