Guest guest
I have a bit of a different story. Kids are being given drugs for behavior. They are given Ritalin, and I know of one 11 yr old that was on 40 mg Paxil a day. It must have been 2 times a day to be 40 mg. There are oodles of foster kids on this stuff, and they are called Special needs kids, and everyone gets more money for the special needs variety. I doubt that anyone cares much about the child, but the money has a certain attraction. This is going on all over. This particular incident was in Oregon. Kids have a hard way to go now. When I think of the things I did as a kid, I would probably be on Paxil or Ritalin today . Since you do have a little boy it does not hurt to know what is going on out there. sharon ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

A kid that ends up in foster care is going to have something hard going on in their past. Our medical system being what it is, medication is cheaper than things like counseling. We get what we pay for. Medication is just that, medicine. Sometimes it keeps the child functioning while their life is stabilized and they can start facing the deep emotional trauma they may be dealing with. I recommend anyone concerned about this issue, consider taking in a foster kid, or getting involved in programs to help these kids. (I do) The money you get doesn't begin to cover what is needed by a troubled kid. You'll get money for meds, but if you give the kid real help and counseling, it's going to be out of your pocket. It takes a lot to take care of one of these kids, and I guarantee you, the money you get does not make it any more attractive. Bringing a troubled kid back to stability and off of psychiatric medications is a real job. It's not just the meds, it's the damage done to the child before they got to the meds stage. Foster kids come from backgrounds of neglect and abuse. It's not easy to heal one of these children. These days, putting a kid in the foster care system is a last resort. Frankly I think that in many cases they wait too long. There are some people that should not have kids. And I don't think sending them to " parenting classes " after the kid ends up in the emergency room is much of a solution. It's just postponing the inevitable and leaving the kid exposed to a bad situation longer. When they do end up in foster care, a lot of damage has been done. Frankly, I think there are way easier ways to make money.
