Lotions-experimenting

HI,

I've just starting making simple lotions and I wanted to experiment

further. I was going to try using the same set of ingredients but

vary the oil to water ratio just a bit to see how different the lotion

would or would not feel based on these variations (I would adjust the

other ingredients as needed). My question is will changing the

percentages of the water & oil slightly by only 1, 2 or 3% make any

difference? Would I be wasting time and ingredients on making small

changes to the percentages-would you only notice a difference in the

feel of the lotion if the percentages were more widely varied, say by

at least 5%? Thanks, Susan

I think it depends on what you plan to add. If you wanted to adjust the butter

for example, you could feel a difference by increasing it by 2% or so. IMO you

definately can tell a difference in a lotion when making small adjustments with

oil or water ratios. :) And it's kinda fun finding it all out.

It would depend on the other ingredients. If you are using an

emulsifier like polawax, changing the amount of water and oil would

change the quantity of emulsifier needed to make a stable emulsion.

Yes, any necessary changes to other ingredients would be done to meet

their function, such as an emulsifier. But the oils and water would

change just to how slight variations change the feel of the lotion.
