OT: raw food diet for dogs

I have a question about the raw food diet. I have been feeding my dog

this way for years, sometimes homemade, and sometimes premade patties.

We recently switched from a chicken/turkey based recipe to a

lamb/venison based one. My dog is shedding in clumps!

Now I seem to remember that this happened before when we were doing a

red meat recipe and that it is expected. Is this right? I am also just

worried that he might have Lyme, even though he shows no signs of

illness at all. Can fur falling out be a sign of Lyme?

Thanks!

Hi Debbie, I breed naturally raised German Shepherd Dogs. I feed all raw

and raise pups on raw – have done so for ages, even. I am fortunate to have

a holistic vet who is a licensed DVM (from Cornell) and believes in raw

feeding.

I do have a female that runs ‘hot’ and I try to feed her more cooling foods

most of the time, but it sounds more like your dog may be blowing a summer

coat to prepare for winter. Often, I find people looking for diets to

decrease shedding in their dogs. They don’t understand that shedding is

normal and HEALTHY for dogs. GSDs tend to shed heavily twice a year

(blowing coat) and shed in large clumps. They shed some all year.

What breed dog do you have and where do you live? This will help determine

what’s going on.
