Guest guest
Hey Ien .. other good folks .. > SH & ^%! Thanks so much for this alert. > Funny, one would think hazelnut oil would be > an expensive specialty item. Naaa ... the entire Black Sea Coast of Turkey has long been the world's largest producer of Hazelnuts .. if one wants to buy it by the ton they can get it for around $2.50 a pound .. shipping costs are higher than the oil itself .. IF .. one doesn't ship in a large volume. Extra Virgin Olive Oil .. if purchased by the ton will run you around $6.50 .. same shipping conditions apply. > We use Olive oil all the time. I just get it > extra virgin grocery store brand. Read the labels well .. especially the fine print on the rear label. Not sure what your rules are in Canada but in the USA one can legally market an adulterated Extra Virgin Olive Oil as long as they say its adulterated .. the trick is to have a monstrous declaration on the front that it contains 100% Pure Extra Virgin Olive Oil .. and on the back .. in verrrrrrrrrry small print .. it will say something like .. mixed with X % of something else. > Are you telling me this might NOT be > the real thing? Perzackly!! I've been telling this to folks on this and other lists for many years now .. but folks don't pay a lotta attention until its published by some media source. ;-) Some of the many posts I made are listed below .. they are in the archive of this News Group. Was a time when I had to have about as much expertise in the area of Olive Oil as I do in Rose Otto and the Origanums .. I had to gain that experience because I was into commodities trading then and even after I got out of that and into only natural products I was laying big bucks on the line to import Olive products to the USA. And it was after this European fiasco that it became next to impossible to obtain bulk Early Harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Turkey .. which as far as I know, is the ONLY source for Early Harvest X-Virgin .. and for water extracted Pomace. I've been out of stock for years and folks who continue to write probably don't really understand when I tell them there are political issues to be overcome .. those issues are .. Turkey tightened their requirements for export in bulk in an attempt to put the habeus slamus on this illegal trade. Quality Turkish Extra Virgin and Early Harvest Extra Virgin was being mixed with lower quality Italian Olive Oils and sold as Italian Extra Virgin .. some of this was not illegal in that the EU recognizes " Valued Added " .. meaning an animal hide shipped from Iran to England and made into a belt becomes an Origin England belt. This is allowed when the value of the final product exceeds the original value of the raw materials by a certain percent .. or .. when the purpose for which the product will be used has changed. Bertolli was/is one large company that did/does? this. The Turkish government has always been rather nationalistic about protecting what they see as " National Treasures. " The reason for this is because the corrupt Ottoman Sultans allowed the West to rape Turkey .. many of their ancient artifacts are in Western museums .. and when Ataturk created the Republic of Turkey he went after those artifacts .. the government today is still following Ataturk's road with a lot of zeal. The Sivas Kangal sheep dog and the Van swimming cat are two animals that can't be exported .. but they are in the USA as Anatolian Shepherd and Akbas .. and Van Kitty. This mentality is what drove them to protect Turkish high quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It was in early January 2002 that I sold the last of my Early Harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil .. http://health./message/4191 .. ever since then folks been bugging me to get more. ;-) This is but one of the many posts where I told folks about the Italian problem .. http://health./message/12142 Here is a post from April 2007 .. http://health./message/46994 And a couple from October 2007 .. and I am still working on getting some more of the 10 Star product. http://health./message/49872 http://health./message/49908 > Moreover, I avoid soy oils like the plague. > This really gets my dander up. Caveat Emptor! > By the way, what is a dander? What does > it look like when it is down? I musta missed the reference but I think you are referring to something written about one having their " dander up " . It basically means getting angry or upset .. though the exact origin can be confusing. http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/get-your-dander-up.html > Ien in the Kootenays, who has not had coffee, > breakfast or algae yet and needs to get out > of here before she starts babbling incoherently > http://freegreenliving.com (blog) Slept late last night .. worked on the PC till after 10 then watched a couple of good movies .. Hi Butch, You are totally correct .. bad thing is, too many brands are NOT disclosing this info on the labels. Front back, big or small, its not on there anywhere at all (all of a sudden I feel like Dr. Seuss . Its downright scandalous! We got the FDA involved in our local issue, and they even told us, sadly ours was not an isolated incident! Thank goodness for saponification values. We were able to tell with one batch of soap this stuff was not right! Now in all fairness, I have seen olive blends marked properly and all the ingredients listed. Its the stuff that doesn't have the real ingredients disclosed that I have a beef with (and the gov't apparently does too). Guest guest
that is quite disturbing to know that people are adulterating olive oil. i immediately went to check my 4 litre can of olive oil after reading this thread. mine states 'extra virgin olive oil' and then underneath '100% pure, first cold pressed' there is a nutritional breakdown on the side. no statements abt being adulterated, although my olive oil is from spain, and there is a spanish logo and an 'international olive oil council' logo on there. it says, 'product of spain produced and packed in spain for 'congafoods' (which is an australian company) this was the most expensive olive oil i could find in the supermarket (luckily for me it was on sale when I bought it), but based on that info (price and the logos), I assumed that it was kosher. but after reading abt unsound practices, i can't help but be a little worried. does anyone know abt this particular olive oil? It's branded 'moro'. and i am in australia. > <%40>, > " Butch Owen " <butchowen wrote: > > <snipped> > > > > Read the labels well .. especially the fine print on the rear label. > > Not sure what your rules are in Canada but in the USA one can legally > > market an adulterated Extra Virgin Olive Oil as long as they say its > > adulterated .. the trick is to have a monstrous declaration on the > > front that it contains 100% Pure Extra Virgin Olive Oil .. and on the > > back .. in verrrrrrrrrry small print .. it will say something like .. > > mixed with X % of something else. > > Butch,
Guest guest
OK, I have the bottle right here. Western Family brand, cold pressed extra virgin, imported from Italy, created for Overwaitea foods.. On the back it just has some information about how Olive oil may get cloudy if it gets cold. I don't see anything about other ingredients. Does this mean it is OK, or just that they are lying? Gosh, being a savvy consumer is turning into a full time job! Guest guest
I don't know about Australia, but here you can check on the FDA list for adulturated oil. I bought some that said 100% Olive Oil. It had olives on the front of the can. I was making soap with it and my soap was coming out funky. I had it tested and it was mostly Soybean Oil!! I turned them into the FDA and I believe they are now on the FDA list as well. Even if it says 100% Olive Oil and everything looks " kosher " , you might want to have it tested.
