Howdy Marcia ..

And Kathleen .. and other good folks who have worked for years to

expose Gary Young and his entire network of Young Living groupies.

Folks need to take this post step at a time so as to not become

confused .. I confused myself putting it together. ;-)

1. Your blog .. http://www.aromaconnection.org/ .. references the

article entitled, " Essential oils and aromatherapy: A rebuttal to

bunk science. " found at

http://www.dbskeptic.com/2007/09/22/essential-oils-and-aromatherapy-a-rebuttal-t\

o-bunk-science-and-the-healing-power-of-odors/

... folks should read this carefully.

Around 45% down from the top of that page (under paragraph 4) we find

the statement .. " *** as well as Gary Young's rebuttal to criticism

(PDF). **** " Which is found at

http://enews.essentialscience.net/public/QckRebut.pdf

2. This poorly written rebuttal by Young Living was in reply to a

Quackwatch article exposing Gary Young .. written by Dr. Stephen

Barrett http://www.quackwatch.org/11Ind/young.html .. the Quackwatch

article is worth a read. I am listed as a source in the references

at the bottom of the article

3. The YL rebuttal mentions (in part) comments made by me and

allegedly refuted by Professor K. Husnu Can Baser. My comments were

in regard to an investigation I conducted while in Turkey ..

originally posted to the now defunct Idma News Group .. on 19 March

1998, and later (in March 2002 and on 30 November 2004, posted to the

Oils & Herbs News Group .. at

http://health./message/27043

4. And then .. I rebutted Young Living's rebuttal of Dr. Barrett's

Quackwatch article .. its at

http://health./message/27049

5. Granted, my post was written in haste and if I were to take the

time to rewrite it now it would contain more detail, but I have

concluded that countering the antics of Young Living and con man Gary

Young are not worth the effort. I will, however, be more specific

regarding my comments on Professor K. Husnu Can Baser, a man I once

held in great esteem and a man who I thought was a good friend for

many years .. a man who I know held Gary Young in contempt and often

commented that he was a clown, a commercial marketer and in no way a

man of science .. a man who held a position of great responsibility

but always took the time to chat with me via telephone weekly and a

man who I visited on more than one occasion. I even took Martin Watt

to visit with Professor Baser and Martin can even recall his negative

comments on Gary Young. Those comments were in a conversation that I

generated .. and I was pleased that Professor Baser was not reluctant

to make them in the presence of a stranger.

6. It was in November 2004 that I wrote the post referenced in

paragraph 4 (above). I was still in Turkey .. doing all I could to

avoid being seen as an " Ugly American " .. comfortable with the many

good relationships I had built with folks in the industrial,

political, military and academic fields .. and technically I was still

a " guest " in the country .. I had been able to stay in Turkey since

May 1988 with a " Residence Permit " and I knew (from an administrative

point) how easy it was to lose that permit if I badmouthed an

official (Professors are officials of a sort there) and even one could

be held liable in the legal system for doing same. At the same time,

though I was frustrated at best and certainly disappointed with the

comments allegedly made by Professor Baser, my regard for his great

technical expertise was still high. Even today I accept that he is

perhaps one of the most technically proficient experts in the field of

Pharmacognosy .. however .. I am disappointed by his lack of Ethics!

7. It is now my opinion that, unfortunately, Professor Baser, like

many other people I know of in France and in the USA, apparently fell

victim to greed! Gary Young had long tried to host Professor Baser

and his wife in the USA but Baser always refused .. he told me why he

refused and said he would continue to refuse. It is my understanding

now that he finally relented and got the royal treatment on a trip ..

at no expense to him. In the comments in my post I said that I had

written to him twice and he had not answered .. make that three times

now because I wrote a final post to him that laid everything on the

table .. I asked him why and how he could make such untrue statements

and what had he had gained from it. I received no reply. I even

called once and left a message but he did not call back.

8. This bothered me a lot because (1) As Martin can confirm, Baser

and I were once close friends and it never good to lose a friend ..

even worse if the reason is financial gain .. and .. (2) I had stuck

my neck out for him and placed my Residence Permit status at risk when

a move was (successfully) made to remove him from as Director of the

Medicinal and Aromatic Plant and Drug Research Center and put him back

into the classroom. It was a political move and I wrote a

condemnation of that move to the Turkish government's Institute for

Higher Education .. I strongly recommended they reconsider based on

Professor Baser's many years of internationally recognized work. In

Turkey it was not the right of a foreign guest to do this .. and even

though (justified or not) some folks believed that I was a Big Fish in

a Little Pond at the time, it was still risky to write such a letter.

Professor Baser appreciated this greatly and it is a norm for Turks to

not forget a person who comes to their defense .. but unfortunately,

it appears that Professor Baser did forget.

9. From a professional point of view, I believe that it was probably

not in the best interests of the Turkish government to move Professor

Baser from his position because he was well known throughout the world

for being one of the top dogs in the field .. but I never knew all of

the intimate details behind this move. From a personal point of

view, I believe that

he deserved it because I have a very low tolerance for actions that

smack of lack of ethics .. and I believe that Professor Baser's

actions .. which he has had more than one opportunity to deny but has

failed to do so .. point to a lack of ethics.

Y'all keep smiling. :-)

PS:

1. For the new folks .. and some long term members who might have

forgotten .. it is very easy to pull up past posts regarding Young

Living .. at least those that had proper subject lines .. lines that

began with Young Living .. or YL .. or Gary Young .. or GY. There

are over 1,000 such posts in the archive going back as far as 2001 ..

there are probably many, many more that were IMPROPERLY titled so they

will be difficult to retrieve .. one post that was properly titled is

in regard to MLMs in general .. http://www.vandruff.com/mlm.html

2. In fact, using proper subject lines is now a matter of Policy on

this News Group .. the List Mom made it so on 11 September 2007 ..

click on http://health.

and then on " List Rules " and you will find this policy .. titled

" Netiquette Policy on Subject Lines " . This policy is not intended to

tell folks how to cut the mustard .. its intended to help all of us

when we want to pull up files from the Archive.

Hi Butch,

Regardless of what folks think, Dr. Barrett continues to be a mover and shaker

in the Quackwatch arena. He doesn't miss much if anything and can send some

good help where it's needed.

Thanks for helping his cause as long as it's for the common good.
