Guest guest
I’ve pondered this for quite awhile. I have used the skin creams from Mt. Rose for years. The ingredients are organic cold-pressed virgin olive oil, organic sesame oil, grapeseed oil, organic aloe vera gel, flower waters, distilled water, organic coconut oil, unrefined beeswax, vitamin E, and therapeutic grade essential oils. They come in 50 ml amber jars. I do not refrigerate them and use them every day. I have NEVER had any go bad. I just can’t figure out how they do it. HELP?? Guest guest
Hi Bonnie MRH's aloe has food grade preservatives in it. As far as I know their hydrosols have no added preservatives. Many essential oils are antiseptic (and some have antifungal and antiviral properties as well) but it depends on the essential oil (different essential oils will have different antiseptic ability, and will affect different bacteria) and the concentration used. Most of the larger companies tend to use a blend of natural preservatives (like herbal extracts which contain alcohol, essential oils, and alcohol--but it depends on which herbal extracts and essential oils, not all will work) and antioxidants. I think using blends of certain natural preservatives and antioxidants are effective (though many people will disagree with me on this) BUT water based products (like creams/lotions/water based serums) preserved with natural preservatives just don't last as long as those with synthetic preservatives. (max life of a natural cream preserved with certain natural preservatives: a couple months, but if it has a high concentration of alcohol in it then shelf life is probably longer but only by a few weeks or maybe a couple more months. Shelf life is only an estimate though). I usually only use naturally preserved products (most of the time I make my own) but I tend to use them up within a month or two. I'd say that MRH's cream shelf life is probably just about a month or maybe a tad longer. I personally think that any cream preserved only with natural preservatives that is sold should go through lab testing to test the efficiency of the preservatives used (but often many companies don't because of the cost). But that's just my 2 cents. Interesting natural preservatives are Suprapein, Biopein, and Neopein (blends of certain herbal extracts that the manufacturer has lab tested against different bacteria, yeast, mold and compared to synthetic preservatives). But they are hard to get and (at least the suprapein, haven't tried the others) has a very distinct smell (I combine it with essential oils so that helps!). (Some of the extracts in these products are thyme and oregano--and I don't know about the extracts but the essential oils can be skin irritants). I would be very interested to hear what other people think about Suprapein, Biopein, and Neopein. Cheers, Li , " Bonnie Kuhlman " <kuhlman wrote: > > I've pondered this for quite awhile.
