Guest guest
Hi Martin: Here is my take on using Lemon and/or Peppermint on Spiders. If the Peppermint hasn't worked for you, why not try some Lemon Verbena in your shelves? Should you not have access to the Verbena, contact me direct and I'll send you some dried. May even still have some fresh in the garage. We kept one pot in the garage for the Winter just in case of losses. Did lose 5 plants last year due to a week long hard freeze after having temps in the 70's and 80's. Still have some fresh peppermint too that I can send. It might even be possible to infuse some of the Verbena leaves into some oil and use as a furniture polish to make them stay away. Even tho they are beneficial, I personally can't stand Spiders! Their bites are forever to heal, all bites whether poisonous or not can cause trouble. Here is what my Doctor said recently: " Spiders have protein juices that when inserted into what they think is food, will cause the internal parts of insects, etc., to change to liquids so that they can drink their meals~since they only have a sipper to eat with. " This happened after a spider scraped my hand and it was swollen for weeks before easing up. This was a non-poisonous one! It creates an infection under the human skin. The Recluse and Black Widow do much more damage such as skin and tissue loss, etc. That was two Summers ago & thank goodness for Black Salve that saved the day on them. There is a Botanical Spray made with natural pyrethins~daisy type geranium that might work for the Spiders too. My can is sooo old, not sure where I bought it. Caulk every crevice where they might come in too. Especially under the sinks, etc. This helps if you can catch it before they begin to come in. Spiders move before the weather gets really cold. When you see them begin to make their webs close to the house is when to begin your caulking attacks, etc. One thing I try to do is dribble drops of pure peppermint eo along the metal door facing at the foot. This helps keep ants away too. Make sure it dries up a bit before walking in it tho. Best of luck with the creepy crawlies, deb Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Search. Guest guest
I have not tried verbena oil, but as I have got some I will give it a try. That oil is far too dangerous for human skin so with a bit of luck it might irritate spiders enough to make them realise that my chimney is not a good place! I also have some dried verbena from way back, but that would create too much of a mess around my gas fire. Thanks and if it works I will report back. Here in the UK the temperature went up a few degrees yesterday and guess what? A spider came out of hibernation and crept up the wall by my bookcase. So despite heavy vaccuming they are still hiding away. Guest guest
Martin, How do you feel about being a guinea pig for us? I spent about an hr and a half today looking for info on your spider problem and the results as are follows: ( everyone of these suggestions, were recommended by other people who also claim they work) Natural spider repellent can be done two ways of both if you prefer. The first is chestnuts, yes chestnuts spiders hate chestnuts and they won't even come near them. So if you place them around your house cottage or shed they will stay away. The second way to repel spiders is to use lemon pledge. Its not a natural spider repellent but it works. Spiders hate lemons and their taste buds are on the tips of their legs. So by spraying your window and door frames inside and out will keep spiders away. Spiders do not like coconut oil and vinegar mixed hope this helps I seen this on a home fix it channel/ do it yourself channel I have never tried it as I don't have spiders but I hope it works for you. Spray straight 5% white distilled vinegar with a teaspoon of coconut oil to help remove and help prevent spider webs. Good luck, and if you do decide to try these, let us know what worked for you. Oh and Happy New Year! Carol
Guest guest
Always happy to try stuff out, but all these formulas either don't work for more than a few hours, or don't work at all. The ones on chestnuts is nuts if you excuse the pun. I have been in chestnut woods where the spiders webs are all over the fallen nuts including the ones broken by various creatures. The big problem with the aromatic repellents is they evaporate so quickly, especially near a heat source such as a fire. The spiders creep down my steel chimney as soon as it has cooled at night. I have a gas fire so it soon cools. Martin , Carol <cjpearce wrote: > > Martin, How do you feel about being a guinea pig for us? Guest guest
Hi Martin, I have a soap workshop in my garden which is a log cabin, Unfortunately the spiders love it in there. I use all manor of essential oils inc. Peppermint and Lemon and this hasn't deterred them. I hate spiders, they make me scream.. Guest guest
I have a book entitled " Grandmother's Natural Remedies & Nutrition " . It says to put pennyroyal on cotton balls and place it around where you see the spiders. Don't know if it will work, but I guess it's worth trying. Another suggestion was placing cloves, bay leaves, or sage in locations where a problem exists, and if that doesn't work try mixing 2 cups of 20 Mule Team Borax with any powdered sweetener in a large container and sprinkle areas you know they frequent. Guest guest
If it is impossible to get rid of the spiders, you may still feel better if they don't creep you out quite as much. EFT works ridiculously well for this stuff. Of course you still want to keep a weary eye on poisonous ones. Though even if you get bitten, EFT can help with that too. The website is a mind-boggling treasure trove of case histories, and the basics are free to learn. Here is a link that goes straight to a case of arachnophobia. http://tinyurl.com/2tfaml And since we are on the topic, here is an example of EFT in daily life that happened just a few days ago. ___ On the way out of the pool I noticed a lady lying on the bench between the dressing room and the outside. Someone else was with her, helping her to cool down. When I emerged from the shower the same woman was sitting in the dressing room, looking somewhat distressed. She said she had high blood pressure and had stayed in the water too long. " Would she like to try something totally different? " " Sure, why not " . I asked what she was feeling at that moment that was most bothering her. Nausea and dizziness. Two little rounds of tapping on nausea and dizziness, and she felt much better, to her utter amazement. It took 3 minutes, if that. I wonder what she'll tell the people back home in Calgary about Nakusp, where fat old ladies wrapped only in a towel start tapping on you.
