Guest guest
Hey! I still have a long way to go myself . I am trying to get to the same point you are and also be sustainable (as much as I can be in a gated community in the city). First and easiest step is to find an organic foodstore/market. I love to go to Whole Foods. They not only have organics and naturals but also a lot of other environment-friendly products (like diapers - beauty products- cleaning supplies - etc). You might want to see if there is one close to your house. Just do a search (wholefoods.com i think). A great way to know what you are bringing into your home is to have a small garden or a few fruiting trees. A compost bin (again do a search online) is a great way to keep the garden going great! I am also a member of freecycle. There are locations everywhere so you can probably find one online for your area. The point of freecycle is pass on usable items to people who need it when you no longer do. I found a NEW diaper genie and a NEW compost bin this way. Sometimes people give away garden supplies/plants, baby formula, beds, everything. If you ever want someone to talk to about this stuff just email me (dfairytaleending). I still am learning but you have to start somewhere. Oh and another thing to look into before i forget... Soap! There is another group I am part of on . Almost all the soaps, shampoos, etc out there are harmful. You can either purchase the healthy versions or produce them yourself (my new venture). THey are made from oils and lye. Using homemade soaps and such is better for the skin because it doesn't add chemicals to them that dry up instead of moisturize. I can go further into this if you would like. My reply is getting pretty lengthy... lol --------------------------- So pointers and help with where to start would be great! Guest guest
Hi, My apology for not addressing you personally but since you didn't sign your post, I don't know who I am addressing. Along the same lines as the last post, you can make your own cleaning products. Vinegar, baking soda, cream of tartar, etc make great cleaning products. Just google *homemade* *cleaning products.* You can make handmade soaps, salves, ointments, etc. We have only been doing this for several years and we are still making changes. (One note on soaps. If you decide to make soaps, please read, read, read! If you need to know of some helpful sites or groups, *please* let one of us know.) Here is one of the reasons we are evolving to the natural. JAccording to a cosmetology instructor that I know, Panteene Shampoo has the same ingredients as Mop 'n Glow. hmmmmm...no wonder it boasts of giving shiny hair! ;0) If you have a garden, you may want to learn canning (since it takes no room in the freezer. Also if the electricity ever goes out, you do not lose everything). Even if you only grow tomatoes (for an example). From tomatoes you would be able to can tomato juice, tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, salsa, V8-type juice, etc. No Additives. Just pure natural food that you grow without chemicals. The more you evolve, the more options you will find. Since your children are young, I would also think about making toys as opposed to buying them. That way, YOU know the type of paint used, you know about " moving parts " etc. Besides (and now I'm telling my age! lol) but eons ago, kids had more fun with the boxes the toys came in. Have fun! and Enjoy! your new way of life, Cindy B. Hi all. I am the momma of two toddlers with another on the way. I want my small family of 5 to start begin extremely healthy and nautral. Almost all the soaps, > shampoos, etc out there are harmful. > Anything taken to the extreme can be harmful, it just depends on what your focus on is. Most current detergents are made from different types of soap. there are different types of lye. (KOH, Naoh, and a few more if I'm not mistaken like aluminum hydroxide.) The different detergents are made from those mixed with fats, and then the resulting soap is reacted with something. Remember we are all made of chemicals.. Someone touting something with no added chemicals is totally lying to get you to buy something or just really, really not thinking. Manure is a chemical. It has methane in it, however added to the soil it becomes beneficial, however, if you put too much in it... your plants will not grow turn yellow and die.. All in moderation... Jennifer (not everything man has created has been bad for us.)
Guest guest
You came to the right place! One thing to do this spring: instead of spraying your Dandelions, harvest them like the gold that they are, and use them. Get some of the roots as soon as possible before they bloom, and make a tincture, either in alcohol or Apple Cider Vinegar. Tincture of Dandelion is very helpful for your liver. You can't possibly avoid all toxins, but you can sure strengthen your liver so you can cope with them better. Great to see young parents with the right stuff. Your family is lucky to have you.
