Guest guest
Howdy Carol, Ahh, Butch, just wait until it gets to the point it is in Toronto, > Smoking is banned in most places in the USA .. to include Tennessee. No smoking period in any bar or restaurant. > smoking in public places was banned a few years ago, all bars were > forced to put in special smoking rooms that were ventilated to the > outside, these rooms are like large glass fish tanks, all us non smokers > get to watch everyone puff through the windows, then this past fall, the > city decided that it was now smoke free, all those bars that paid 20-30 > thousand for those fish tanks, were told that they were no longer > acceptable. The bars are all still thriving, it hasn't caused any hardship, > the smokers now go outside for their puff. > Turkey had separate rooms for smoking in restaurants and in most bars .. European tourists (there are MANY) liked the idea of being able to smoke in Turkey while drinking or dining and they, like the Turks, often spent 3 or 4 hours over dinner. I believe Turkish bars and restaurants that have the right connections will come up with ingenious ways to sorta get around the new law. ;-) Financial losses such as the smoking rooms you describe are probably going to be felt more in the USA if the federal government tries to get ,ore involved in decisions that are really State's Rights .. one loss will be the switch from analogue to digital TV broadcasts this February. > In the past few years, it has become acceptable for smokers, to smoke by > an open window ( even in their own homes) and now the Government of Canada > is going to BAN smoking in your own car if there are children traveling in > it. > I support any U.S. state passing a law prohibiting smoking around children. > Enjoy your puffs while they last. Glad I never took up the habit. > I quit smoking in our home when Tanya was pregnant .. she too has never smoked. I quit entirely shortly after we moved to the USA last summer. Still miss it big time .. especially with my morning 2-3 cups of coffee .. and when I'm having a toddy or a beer. ;-) > And now, your going to love this, the city of Toronto is reviewing a > plan to charge a SIDE WALK TAX, yes, you read that right, you will now > have to pay to stand in line to get into your favorite bar or to see a > Broadway show, if this dipsh*t ( err, I mean politician ) gets his way. > All governments need more taxes to create more government which then needs more taxes, etc., etc. America is in deep kimchi now because of Corporate shenaigans, shady mortgage lenders, corrupt and/or foolish politicians, wasteful spending and spending in the wrong areas. We must stop foolish spending like the Pork Barrel projects both parties tack to each bill that leaves Congress .. and sending 400 billion bucks a year to the Arabs for oil ... and clamp down in many other areas because it appears that Washington thinks they should tax us until we revolt. > What a world! > Agree .. but its the only one we have for now. ;-) Those who speak out against such government foolishness do so because we are not willing to not speak out against it .. and we believe that by doing so, in time we will see better days .. or at least maybe our children or grandchilren will see better days. A consolation (maybe) is that we can speak out .. and in many countries I have worked in .. their best days were still many, many years away from where we are on our worst days. ;-) > Carol > Good luck to us all .. and y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch > > For four years now smoking in government buildings has been illegal in > > Turkey but it was not enforced for those who worked there .. only for > those > > who visited to conduct business. The article is incorrect on the > > percentage of people who smoke .. probably half of the women in Turkey > are > > social smokers .. they will light a cigarette and puff on it to be > sociable > > but like one of our previous presidents, they don't inhale. ;-) >
Guest guest
I can feel for ya, Butch. I quit smoking 25+ years ago - I loved it, but my body just wouldn't let me take another puff. I would go into fits of coughing. I still miss it - such a nasty habit, so addictive and destructive. It took me a long time to have a cup of coffee or glass of wine (any alcoholic drink), talk on the phone, drive the car, (and we can include deal with stress in situations in which I smoked) . . . Without reaching for a cigarette. I would never smoke again now, but I still think about how much I loved to.
