Re: post by Marge that essential oils wouldn't be safe to use in a cat

box, I was wondering if a product I have used in the past was unsafe.

It's a pretty reputable company called Mrs. Meyers

(http://www.mrsmeyers.com) and they sell a Pet Litter Freshener made

with Baking Soda and Essential oils. After running out, I was

considering making my own, until I saw this post.

Thanks for any input.

Hi there,

Have you seen this helpful site?

http://www.thelavendercat.com/

Essential Oils and cats are not a good mix. Cats livers can't rid

themselves of the EO the same way that ours can. So, when I got cats, I had

to radically change the way I work with EO's. No more diffusing in rooms

where my cats go, and no bottles and such around them. I even keep my cats

from EO scented candles and the like.

EO's are great, and I use them quite a bit, but not in cleaning, or anywhere

near my two " kids " .

I just want to be careful.

Cheers,

Christina

And the scary thing with regard to cats and essential oils, is that the

oils (some of them anyway) don't " repel " cats in the way that a lot of

poisons do. It's too bad, not just because we have to be hyper-alert to

keeping the oils away from them, but also because some people operate under

the assumption that " animals are natural and therefore know what's best for

themselves. " These people will see that a cat is drawn to some oil, and

jump to the conclusion that it can't possibly be bad for them. And they can

be very adamant in their beliefs. Not sure how they'd explain dogs being

drawn to antifreeze though... :-)
