Can someone give me a recipe for a disinfectant spray. I am wanting

something I can spray down my daughter's toys, the toilet seat, and

things of that nature. Is it as simple as water and a few essential

oils, such as tea tree and lavender? What about Witch Hazel since it

has alcohol in it? Has anybody used Witch Hazel alone for a disinfectant?

Mara, I would also be interested in a spray using Eos. I make my own sprays

that I keep in the bathroom, kitchen, and a small one for my purse, but I

don’t know how effective they are. I mostly use them for airsprays and the

one in my purse for cooling myself off or when I just need a little pick me

up.

I did find some info in a book I borrowed from a friend – using a spray

bottle of vinegar and another one with hydrogen peroxide will kill most

germs. I use the H.P. a lot in the kitchen because I feed my dogs a raw

diet. I can’t use the vinegar much because it will etch granite counter

tops. I searched on vinegar/hyd. per./bacteria (roughly) and came up with

lots of info including a good study. The hyd. per. needs to be kept in a

dark bottle. I just get the super size at Costco and put a spray top right

on the bottle. Apparently they both work well alone, but better if you use

one then the other. BTW, the book I borrowed is ‘Organic Housekeeping’,

don’t remember the author but I’ve got to get me a copy. It was loaded with

good info.

Hi Mara,

I use white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, in two different spray bottles.

I learned about the trick on this list, and it's supposed to be almost as

effective as bleach. You can search the archives, or try here:

http://www.michaelandjudystouffer.com/judy/articles/vinegar.htm

You spray one, then the other. Don't blend in the same bottle, as that does

not have the same effect. I also use hydrodgen peroxide, if not the full

mix, on fruits and veggies as a cheap alternative to the products found at

the grocery store.

By the way, I recently learned to add fresh citrus peels or dried rose

petals to my vinegar. Now when I use them for cleaning, I get a little

extra out of it. And the house doesn't have that sharply vinegar aroma.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Christina

I use plain ol' oregano hydrosol for most of that stuff, although

sometimes I add some other disinfecting essential oils as the mood

strikes me. Alcohol works, but is toxic, so I don't like to clean the

toys b/c they go in the mouths.

Hi Mara,

We have several people that make a mix of a couple of our blends and

use that to spray surfaces with. One uses it in a hospital and

everyone loves it much better than the other surface sprays.

She mixes the blend with some of our emulsifier and then mixes that

with distilled water. She shakes it well and uses it both at work and

at home. Says she sees great results.

Please e-mail me off the group for specifics.

Hi I am new to the group , but I have been using essential oils for

aromatherapy , cleaning , and medicinal purposes for years now. I

have found that a great general cleaner for floors , counters etc...

is Clove oil ,Lemon Oil ,Cinnamon Bark ,Eucalypts Radiata and

Rosemary oil ( thieves wash) combined with white vinegar and water

to be the best.It leaves the house with an amazing earthy smell and

is as clean as if I would have used bleach.
