Hi Everyone,

I've had a sinus problem for the last couple of years so i use a

nettie pot. It hasn't made the problem go away but it certainly does

help. I've been using a solution of baking soda and salt but i've

noticed there are alot of nasal rinse products available that have

herbs in them. I have tea tree e.o and tea trea leaves. I was

wondering which would be better to use in this case and if anyone has

any other ideas for herbal additives that might help. I have rosemary

e.o also.

Thanks for your help!!

Blessings,

Sherry

It's not really herbal but I've heard a lot of people have good luck

using MSM (at 5-10%) in their neti pot solutions.

Sherry,

This answer is only an educated guess -- I hope someone will have more

concrete information than I do, but I felt I'd better write in case it helps

to avoid an unpleasant situation. :) Mucous membranes are ultra-sensitive,

and the oils that one normally thinks of as helpful in sinus situations can

tend to be some of the more " burny " ones. And e. oils don't disperse well

in water without the addition of a dispersing agent (and here's where I'm

ignorant -- I don't know how safe or desirable it would be to have a

dispersing agent in your sinuses). So, just adding even one drop of an

essential oil to your neti pot could result in getting that drop of

potentially burny (and potentially even more dangerous than that) oil onto a

section of mucous membrane up inside your sinus cavities, and not realizing

it til you're in a lot of pain, and with no way to dilute it or rinse it

off, short of snorting a carrier oil or alchol -- neither of which sounds

pleasant!

If someone else has better info, I humbly defer!

Good luck,

Susan in NC

Hi Sherry

I use a Netti pot all the time.

Once in the morning and at night.

I use sea salt for regular cleansings

but when i have a sinus infection

i take a clove of garlic and slice it

up and pour boiled water over the garlic

and let it steep for 5 or 10 mins then

i use that in the Netti pot with and 1/8 of

a teaspoon of sea salt....i do it 3 times

a day making it fresh each time...it usually

clears up my infection within 3 days.

Just from personal experience and research - I would not use any

herbs in the neti pot. I think you run the risk of really irritating

your sinuses and mucos membranes. I use a neti pot every day and

have talked to quite a few others who do so as well and we are in

agreement that the saline solution is the safest way to go.

Good luck,

Emily

Thanks for your help everyone. I'm going to try the steam treatment from

Marge's blog. I was thinking the same thing with the e.o's burning. The

dr. put me on nasonex and it worked for a week. I felt like my lungs might

collapse after taking the expectorant she prescribed.she didn't document it

and I tossed it so we don't even know what it was. The nettie pot helps a

lot but I still have to take benedryl before bed (and sometimes during the

day) or I wind up with terrible headaches. I tried using eucalyptus steam

in the air but it really didn't do much and my husband didn't care much for

it. It's pretty manageable right now but I really don't like taking the

benedryl so I keep looking for other options.

Thanks again!!

Sherry,

On days when you are feeling really bad do you use the netti pot more

than one time that day? On days when my allergies are really bad I

use it two to three times through the day. Once in the morning to

clear out the mucous from the night and then once before bed to help

me sleep better.

The steam will probably be really good for you too.

Hope something helps you out with your problem.

Please let us know how it helps... the other thing, Christi swears by blue

tansy oil (tanecetuum anuum) to avoid the allergy problems that trigger the

sinus problems. She's working on another thing for the blog about using it

right now.

I do it the nettie pot once a day and sometimes twice. I found that three

times kind of irritates my throat for some reason. I also will mix 2 or 3

drops of oregano oil in juice sometimes..it doesn't disperse in the juice

well but I shake the juice and drink it down fast. I've found that it helps

quite a bit too. Nothing is as good as the nettie pot though. I use it

before bed but I still wake up in a couple of hours plugged up again.

Thanks Again,

Sherry
