Guest guest
March 17, 2008 Hello Everyone, It has been some time since I last posted on the list but I will say that I enjoyed very much reading the many posts that come across my computer screen everyday. I have several questions but I also need to give you a little history as to what I have been doing. It was about five years ago, after paying very high prices for EOs that I set out with a partner to find a better way to both use and provide EO to my friends, family and handful of clients who had come to know me as the Oil Guy. Well it worked, not only did I find oils of high quality at very good prices I got to meat some great people like Butch Owen and Martin Watt and now I can now say that I actually have a business in EOs. Prior to last year I always considered this to be a expensive hobby. Well now my business has taken me onto another avenue of butters and creams. It was about eight months ago when a client who had just become pregnant asked me to make a cream for her that she could use everyday or say most days. We have a Everyday Oils Blend that she liked very much but she felt it was too strong (even though it does contain a carrier) to use wile pregnant and she also wanted something that could be applied to her belly to prevent stretch marks. So we created a cream using all " natural " products with no artificial fragrance, additives or preservatives. The cream is a smash as it also stops the itching that is associated with pregnancy. In the Daily Cream are butters, carrier oils and EOs. OK, now you have the picture. We developed a product that people like, we have several Spas that want to carry the product but I have concerns about not having a preservative in the cream. Anyone with experience here? Also, I was in the insurance business for 25 year prior to starting this venture. The cheapest Product Liability policy I have found is $10,000 minimum premium and that is IF they will accept our application. Most companies do not want to touch you with less then five years experience and we just started to make the creams last year. I gladly welcome any comments, advice or sharing of experiences. Guest guest
Hi John, First off congratulations on your growth and successes! If your product does not contain water, it really doesn't need a preservative. I would include vitamin e to help prevent rancidity or rosemary extract (roe). If you are worried that a user might introduce water into the product while using it you might want to go with a " disclaimer " on your product label that states the product does not contain a preservative and therefore water must not be introduced to it. Consumers these days are becoming more educated about skin care, especially naturals and how much better they are than chemical laden stuff that's all around us. I highly recommend you join indiebeauty, Donna Maria's network for indie business owners like us. By joining you also get 1 million insurance coverage for less than 400.00 a year if I remember right. You can also access the insurance by joining the Handcrafted soapmakers guild. Sorry not sure of the web addy. Here's the link for indie. http://indiebeauty.com/channel-ibnyou/insurance.asp Good luck to you! Guest guest
Hi John and congrats! I've been doing handmade bath and body for several years, and Margaret's been at it a WHOLE lot longer, and the short answer is that I agree with her--since you don't list water in your ingredients, you don't need to add a preservative. That said, many people do add a preservative (usually Phenonip for a high-oil formulation) if there is a chance of water sneaking into a container, as microbes in general can live with or without air, but all need water in order to grow, so that's why the rule of thumb is usually that if there is no water there's no need to preserve. Me? I don't add preservative to any no-water formulations. I put my products thru my own acid tests, even at times having deliberately tossed water into a container to see what would happen and really haven't been rewarded with the ickies at all, so I'm pretty confident not adding a preservative. Hope this helped and good luck with your wonderful product! Serra On Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 10:45 AM, John Croskey <John wrote: > > March 17, 2008 > > > OK, now you have the picture.
